Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Ed Thus. 8vo. pp xiv, 330 + publishers advertisements.op red cloth lettered gilt on spine and on front cover. Loosely inserted is a good signed typed one page letter to from 1942 to James Mulvey at Samuel Goldwyn on 7th Avenue New York ,it reads 'Dear Jim, here is all this junk back again a…nd consent to the assignment to Samuel GoldwynÉ Upon the express proviso that in the event such an assignment is made Samuel GoldwynÉ Will execute and forward to me as a separate contract of assumption of all abilities no obligations in said contract in form satisfactory to my counsel sincerely Lillian.' Her name 'Lillian' is signed in ink by her. James A. Mulvey was a prominent film executive who served as president of the Samuel Goldwyn Company. In the mid-1930s, Mulvey and Samuel Goldwyn bought the rights to Lillian Hellman's play The Children's Hour, and they hired Hellman herself to write the screenplay for the 1936 Goldwyn-produced film These Three. The business relationship between the studio and the playwright was ongoing. Documents like the Bonhams Lillian Hellman Ephemera show that Hellman corresponded with Mulvey in the early 1940s regarding ongoing theatrical and film adaptations. Very good indeed in about very good clean dust wrapper very slightly chipped at spine ends. Signedes.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. First collected edition (?). Octavo, 330pp. Presumed first thus, unstated, which seems to have been typical of Random House plays during this period. A very good copy, sunned on the spine, with mold toning to extremities. Small ink scribble on the rear free endpaper. Lacking the dust jacket. A su…perb association copy, and in part the dedication copy, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Hellman on the front free endpaper to Herman Shumlin, who produced and directed all four of these plays on Broadway: "For Herman, see page xii Lillian Feb 1942." The passage referenced reads, "Herman Shumlin has directed and produced all four of the plays. On all four he has worked with the high seriousness which is the first requirement of a good artist." She continues for a full paragraph, extolling his virtues as a director and interpreter of her work. "Watch on the Rhine" was dedicated to Shumlin, and that dedication leaf appears just before the play in this volume, as it did in the first trade edition. An extremely appealing association copy.
