Oversized Hardcover. Condition: Good. In the annals of fashion history, French couturier Paul Poirot (1870-1944) is known for liberating women from corsets and introducing pantaloons into their wardrobes. However, it is his remarkable innovations in the cut & construction of clothing (even though he did not sew) that secure his legacy. This essential volume is the first to explore Poiret's radical modernity from a number of perspectives. Essays describe the historical context of his work: its relation to the dominant artistic discourses of the early 20th century; his role in the paradigmatic shift to a new ideal of feminine beauty. Accompanies the exhbition at @MetMusArt/NYC/May-Aug.2007. Illus., 195 color/photos.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 12" x 14 3/4". Top spine bumped. DJ has tiny chip on front edge (edgeworn). Paul Poiret dominated haute couture in the first decade of the twentieth century. Known in America as the King of Fashion, he liberated women from corsets which had shaped the female form without interruption for hundreds of years. Catalogue based on exhibition "Poiret: King of Fashion". The incentive for the exhibition was the discovery of a treasure trove of clothing that Poiret made for his wife Denise which came up for auction in Paris in 2005. Many of the costumes had never been seen before by anyone outside the Poiret's private circle. So radical were they in terms of modernity that they impelled the curators of the The Costume Institute to reexamine the couturier's contribution to twentieth- century fashion. Poiret was influenced by artistic trends of the early twentieth century, especially orientalism, primitivism, and neoclassicism. He collaborated with graphic artists Paul Iribe and Georges Lepape, who created albums for elite clients. Many of these pochoir prints are illustrated in this volume.
