Frederick John Lucas was born in Dunedin, New Zealand on 18 August 1915, the second child of Charles Frederick Lucas, a farmer, and Ethel Jean Smith. After one year of Otago Boys' High School, he went to work on the family farm. On 21 July 1935, he obtained his pilot's license. Turned down by the Royal New Zealand Air Force due to his lack of education, he worked his way to England and joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) in December 1936. After training, he was posted to No. 10 Squadron RAF in August 1937. His resemblance to the cartoon character and a party trick (swiveling his dentures in his mouth) earned him the nickname "Popeye". He transferred to the Royal New Zealand Air Force to help deliver Wellington I bombers to New Zealand. Afterward, the airplanes and their crews were seconded to the RAF as No. 10 Squadron RAF, based at Feltwell, East Anglia, England. Lucas completed a tour of 30 missions over Germany, but determined to be part of the squadron's first raid on Berlin, he signed up for a second tour of duty. The mission - his 37th - took place on 23 September 1940. In May 1941, he was promoted to squadron leader. Following the death of his wife Joan on 15 December 1941, Lucas was posted back to New Zealand in March 1942. was awarded a bar to his Distinguished Flying Cross in April. He commanded No. 1 General Reconnaissance Squadron, based at Whenuapai air base and later helped form No. 40 (Transport) Squadron. He pioneered air supply routes for the New Zealand military in the Pacific. He was discharged in October 1945 as a wing commander. Ref K 1. Signed by Author(s).

Softcover. Condition: Wie neu. Dust Jacket Condition: Wie neu. Set Jeff Koons : Signed Art Card Jim Beam - J.B. Turner Train + Limited Edition Art Book ****** This exclusive set includes a hand-signed Art Card by Jeff Koons, featuring his iconic sculpture Jim Beam - J.B. Turner Train from 1986 and a limited edition art book *** ITEM 1. The Art Card is signed and dated (87) lower center by Jeff Koons *** This signed art card features Jim Beam - J.B. Turner Train (1986), one of the most iconic works by American artist Jeff Koons. Part of his groundbreaking " Luxury and Degradation " series, the piece critiques consumerism and the allure of luxury products. This card is a rare and desirable collector s item for fans of contemporary art and design culture. *** Professionally framed in a high-quality, handcrafted wooden frame with PLEXIGLAS Optical HC, which is scratch-resistant and UV-protected. The floating presentation within a double (acid-free) passe-partout enhances the artwork s visual appeal. Frame size approx. 44 x 34 cm. *** Jim Beam - J.B. Turner Train is a gleaming sculpture of a vintage American steam locomotive, made from stainless steel and filled with real bourbon whiskey provided by the Jim Beam company. The hyper-polished finish and nostalgic form evoke a sense of luxury, while the use of alcohol as content adds a critical layer of commentary on addiction, social class, and American industrial pride. The visual appeal disguises a deeper message typical of Koons signature style. *** ITEM 2. Art book "Jeff Koons Popeye Sculpture", limited edition of 2,000 copies, published by Galerie Jérôme de Noirmont in 2010. Hardcover, size 24.8 cm × 33 cm with 42 pages, featuring text in English and French. *** Jeff Koons launched the Popeye series in 2002, exploring his signature themes such as surreal object combinations, cartoon imagery, art-historical influences, and children's toys. This series continues his innovative approach, incorporating inflatable toy sculptures, a technique he pioneered over three decades ago in his groundbreaking early works. *** Jeff Koons (b. 1955) is one of the most influential contemporary artists, known for his bold, ironic, and often controversial works that merge pop art, conceptualism, and consumerist culture. From balloon animals in stainless steel to recontextualized household objects, Koons' work blurs the line between high and low art, questioning the nature of artistic value and authorship. His work is featured in major museums worldwide, including the Whitney Museum, Centre Pompidou, and Guggenheim Museum SHIPPING : Worldwide shipping available. CONDITION : artwork and book are in excellent, like-new condition. Signatur des Verfassers.
