"So eng sich ARNIM, vor allem im ersten Teil, inhaltlich und in der Zeichnung der Charaktere an das Trauerspiel von GRYPHIUS anlehnt, so radikal befreit er sich in der dramatischen Technik von der strenggefügten Struktur des Barockdramas. Der Romantiker schwelgt - unter dem Einfluß SHAKESPEAREs - in einer bunten Fülle sinnbildhafter Gestalten und Geschehnisse. Gegensätzliche Episoden werden aneinandergereiht, Phantastisches paart sich mit Wirklichem". (KNLL 1,733). Gerade diese Uneinheitlichkeit ist noch heute Grund für kontroverse Bewertungen des Dramas. Ricarda Huch nennt es "weitläufig" und "nicht eben glücklich", Wilhelm Korff konstatiert eine "innere Mittelpunktlosigkeit" mit daraus resultierendem "bandwurmartigen Charakter". Richard Benz spricht dagegen von "Ausweitung ins Große Welttheater". "Die gegensätzlichen Urteile scheinen - ihrer Perspektive gemäß - berechtigt. Gerecht wird man dem Werk jedoch erste durch eine weniger von bestimmten Gattungsvorstellungen geprägte als die Eigengesetzlichkeit des romantischen Dramas stärker beachtende Sehweise." (KNLL 1,733). "Im Grunde genommen hat ARNIM in der zweiteiligen Bearbeitung von 'Cardenio und Celinde' dasselbe getan, was GOETHE in den zwei Teilen seines 'Faust' mit der Faustsage unternahm. Es ist ein Erweitern und Modernisieren von übernommenem literarischen Material, das im zweiten Teil auf die mythische Stufe erhoben wird.
