Né en 1919, Roger Stéphane a compté parmi ses familiers Jean-Paul Sartre, Jean Genet, Louis Aragon et Georges Simenon. Il est l'un des intellectuels français les plus emblématiques du XXe siècle. Ancien résistant et cofondateur de L'Observateur, il s'est suicidé en 1994. Ernst von Salomon, un des précurseurs du renouveau socialiste qui surgira en Allemagne dès 1918 (et qui, tragiquement, aboutira à Hitler quinze ans plus tard), écrit « Cette première question d'une vie à remplir trouve sa réponse dans la vie même » T.E. Lawrence remarque « L'appel du désert pour les penseurs de la ville a toujours été irrésistible. Je ne crois pas qu'ils y trouvent Dieu, mais qu'ils entendent plus distinctement dans la solitude le verbe vivant qu'ils apportent avec eux » Et Malraux avoue « Je n'aime pas les pauvres gens, ceux en somme pour qui je vais combattre. Je les préfère uniquement parce qu'ils sont les vaincus ». L'aventurier est le contraire du militant ; il est étranger par essence au fanatisme et même au manichéisme Bon état.
