Born in Hawai'i Stevens attended the Naval Academy and graduated in 1868. Served in vessels all over the world he had the good fortune to be in Hawaii and led the marines that hauled down the Hawaiian flag when the U.S. annexed the Kingdom of Hawaii. Served with distinction during the Spanish-American War and retired as a Admiral in 1905. The third generation in his family to retire with flag rank.
