Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Here is "Footprints : An Anthology of Modern South African Prose Authors", Including: Alan Paton, Olive Schreiner, Laurens van der Post, Nadine Gordimer, et al. This hardcover book was issued in South Africa by APB Publishers and Booksellers in 1956 . Of note in this interesting anthology of South African prose is the inclusion without fanfare of a passage from the internationally heralded novel by Alan Paton, "Cry the Beloved Country", published in 1948. The date of "Footprints" publication,1956, was just three years after Paton founded the South African Liberal Party which was instrumental in opposing South Africa's horrible apartheid policies. The other selections in this book are equally illuminating, painting a word picture of what was, at that time, an extremely troubled land. Only some of the selection have political import; there are also essays celebrating the natural beauties and wildlife of South Africa, as well as the cultural richness that thrives there. Taken as a whole, the selections in this book paint a colorful, complex and fascinating picture of mid Twentieth- century South Africa. Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. In December 1946 Penguin Books issued this Premier Issue of the "Penguin Music Magazine, a paperback-sized periodical with a healthy selection of articles and pictures about things musical, including operas, ballet, theater and classical composing. This first issue was edited by Ralph Hill. There is a nice selection of contemporary halftone, black-and-white photographs arranged in a discrete section. This is that scarce First Issue. Number 1. It's a paperback format publication from immediately post-war England in 1946, when paper shortages and restrictions still held sway (1946). The toning of the paper testifies to that . and because of that, such publications are often fragile, and proper care should be taken when handling them. PENGUIN MUSIC MAGAZINE # 1 (PREMIER ISSUE) CONTENTS : ** Through the Looking-Glass - by Ralph Hill ** The Future of Opera in England - by Edward J. Dent ** Music Inspired by Painting - by Michael Ayrton ** Anglo-French Relations - by Edward Lockspeise ** Soviet Music in War-Time - by Alan Bush ** New-Comer to Music - by Cecil Elliott ** The Orchestra Looks at the Audience - by Frederick Thurston ** Standards of Performance - by Geoffrey Sharp ** To Start an Argument. What is the Purpose of Music? - by Scott Goddard & C. B. Rees ** Personality Corner - by C. B. Rees ** Brains Trust - by Julian Herbage ** New Books - by Stanley Bayliss ** New Music - by Robin Hull ** The Record Collector - by Alec Robertson ** Music on the Air - by Richard Goer ** Opera in London - by Stephen Williams ** Ballet in London - by Arnold Haskell ** Concerts in London - by George Dannatt Northern Diary : ** Music in Scotland - by Stewart Deas ** Music in Liverpool - by A. K. Holland ** Music in Manchester - by J. H. Elliott ** Music in Birmingham - by John Waterhouse TITLE : Penguin Music Magazine No. 1 (Premier Issue) EDITOR : Ralph Hill IMPRINT : Penguin Books PLACE : Harmondsworth, Middlesex, England DATE : 1946 EDITION : First Edition STATUS : Small periodical in paperback format; Illustrated with photographs; 127 pages; 5" x 8" decorated wraps (Dancing penguin on front. CONDITION GOOD PLUS -- Clean and serviceable with the following noted: EXTERIOR : Moderate surface rub - a touch of scuff on rear, as well as some shallow surface creasing. spine is darkened. BINDING : Solid as can be expected - no leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR : The paper is unavoidably toned (to be expected from immediate post war production); an impact has caused some top corner tip creasing and a bit of loss near the end of the book. Basically the interior is clean and presentable, toning considered. A neatly inked date is written in small script on the first page (April 30, 1947).…

hardcover. 8vo 306pp. from front flap: "Love and romance are different, we are told. Romance is kin to infatuation while true love--it sounds almost like a brand name--is related somehow to the First National Bank, an arrangement of security rather than affection. Love, according to this theory, is an agreement between all the members of a family at least one of whom, the mother-in-law, is never quite satisfied with the contract. The participants in this sort of match range far and wide in the community and instead of its being a covenant between two peopl, a love affair, it becomes a topic for national discussion, a political subject. "The greatness of our nations is based on. . ." includes stories by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Sinclair Lewis, John Cheever, John O'Hara, more. scarce with dust jacket. #01233. very good+: mild shelf wear, toning around edges of text block. text clean, binding tight. very good: age toning, mild corner wear, NOT clipped ($5.95).…
