Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First Edition. A detailed, well-illustrated introduction to Phrenology--the practice of reading one's character traits & personality by the bumps on the skull--by the leading American practitioner & lecturer on the practice in the mid-19th century, when phrenology was wildly popular. It would lose favor by the end of the century, following Fowler's death in 1887, & become classified as a pseudoscience. First published by Fowler & his brother, Lorenzo, by their own phrenological offices in Boston in 1869, this is an unknown printing of that FIRST EDITION, with annotations from former owner dated 1874 to title page. His name & that of Professor Fowler's also appear here, suggesting that he had a phrenological reading from Fowler himself, who completed this information in the front & filled out the charts (in pencil) that follow on the next 4 pages with this client's measurements. In 174 pages + 10 pages of ads for & descriptions of Dr. Fowler's other works in rear. Hardcover has textured olive green cloth over boards, with gilt design & lettering to front board. Condition is Fair: heavy soiling & dampstaining to exterior, affecting only the endpapers inside. Other pages generally clean with modest tanning, unmarked save for aforementioned title page & charts writing. Both hinges are cracked, but text block is solid, though slightly cocked. Ugly, but a valuable introduction to a very popular practice ! Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have!
