The third edition of this work, published in the same year as the first edition. With a half-title. 'Le Deserteur' by Louis-Sebastien Mercier, published in 1771. The first edition of this work. 'Les Fausses Infidelites' by Nicholas Thomas Barthe, published in 1768. The first edition of this work. 'La Brouette du Vinaigrier' by Louis-Sebastien Mercier, published in 1775. The first edition of this work. Pierre Beaumarchais was a French polymath, being a revolutionary, publisher, spoy, horticulturist, watchmaker, as well as many other pursuits. He was a supporter of American independence. Louis-Sebastien Mercier was a French writer and dramatist, who began his career by writing heroic epistles. He was a member of the National Convention, and voted against the death penalty for Louis XVI, later being imprisoned during the Reign of Terror. Nicholas Thomas Barthe was a French poet and playwright in the eighteenth century. In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the spine. First edition, apparently unrecorded variant issue, or unrecorded early piracy, of this classic play (the basis of Gioachino Rossini's celebrated opera 'The Barber of Seville), in a custom binding. Attractively bound in full blue calf over beveled boards, spine title and ruled in gilt with twin gilt fleur-de-lys, covers bordered with twin gilt rules and gilt floral devices at inner corners, front cover filled with a veritable deluge of fleur-de-lys in gilt, 239 in all (in 24 rows), rear cover features 49 gilt-tooled fleur-de-lys in a diamond design (7 x 7, on the diagonal), blue silk patterned endpapers, and ribbon marker. Binding is likely post World War II, but does not appear recent. Spine a bit faded, but does not distract; interior is nice, with some aging to the edges and very light foxing. This title appears to be an unrecorded variant from those given in Cordier, most closely matching #47, but with variants in pagination, and the title page mis-spelling the author's name 'Beaumachais', and with other variants, or perhaps an early piracy, Title reads, in full: 'LE BARBIER DE SÉVILLE, OU LA PRÉCAUTION INUTILE, COMEDIE EN QUARTRE ACTES; par M de Beaumachais, Représentée sur le Théatre de la Comédie Française, aux Tuileries, le 23 de Fevrier 1775. Though the novel did not meet with much success, the process made Cooper realise his potential as a writer. Cooper went on to write profusely, and is now best remembered for his novel 'The Last of the Mohicans'.Volume II bound without the publisher's adverts as usual. The price is printed as 60f. and was corrected by hand to 80f. on the title page. This is therefore a copy of the first edition, which was sold at the price of the title edition of 80f. - The premiere took place in Rome in 1816 and soon became one of the most successful operas in the world. C'est une contrefaçon tronquée, dont la parution poussa les amis de l'auteur à publier la suivante à l'insu même de Beaumarchais. La première édition avouée par l'auteur a paru en 1797. First edition of the author's first novel, written in the style of Jane Austen and her contemporaries. The setting is 19th-century Northamptonshire, therefore atypical of the author's subsequent works. Copies in the original boards are rare: we can trace only four copies in original boards sold at auction in the last 45 years (including this present copy). These copies include the half-titles and also the errata slip. Spiller & Blackburn note that "the errata slip may be found at the end of either the first or the second volume; there was no uniformity of practice". In this copy the slip appears after the title page in vol. 1. Spiller & Blackburn 1; BAL 3825. 2 vols, octavo. Original bluish green boards, lettering to spines by hand. Housed in a custom black cloth box. Contemporary and later ownership signatures, including one dated 1827. Both vols rebacked preserving original spine, extremities somewhat worn, occasional heavy foxing, small repairs to fore-edge and corner of title page in vol. 2, occasional light dampstaining; a very good copy and extremely rare.

Cette édition contient : La Préface de l'auteur (suivie de "Caractères et habillements de la pièce"), au verso du faux-titre sous la liste des libraires dépositaires de l'ouvrage, l'Avis de l'Editeur et à la fin, après les Approbations (en dates des 28 février 1784 par Coqueley de Chaussepierre et du 21 mars 1784 par Bret, suivi du Permis d'imprimer et de représenter en date du 29 Mars 1784, par Lenoir), l'Achevé d'Imprimer du 28 Février 1785. Small octavo, 20th-century full brown morocco gilt, marbled endpapers. $5500.First edition of Cooper's first novel, published anonymously, handsomely bound by Bennett."Playfully challenged by his wife's cousin to write a better book than one he was reading aloud, Cooper, after a false start, produced Precaution (1820), an imitation of an English novel of manners, which brought him to the attention of the New York literary world" (ANB). Until the publication of Precaution, Cooper had been a gentleman farmer with large debts. His literary career was so immediately successful that his financial problems were solved by 1826, the year in which The Last of the Mohicans appeared. His writing career continued until 1850, one year before his death. "His worldwide fame attests his power of invention, for his novels have been popular principally for their variety of dramatic incidents, vivid depiction of romantic scenes and situations, and adventurous plots. But a more sophisticated view caused a revival of interest in the mid-20th century concentrating on Cooper's novels in their creation of tension between different kinds of society, between society and the individual, between the settlement and the wilderness, and between civil law and natural rights" (Hart, 165-66).
