Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Duodecimo, 141mm. Physical description, [2],1 -14. All edges gilt. Engraved throughout on the recto's only. Contents very slightly dusty. Contemporary red goatskin, lightly rubbed. the covers with a gilt rolled-tooled border, and the corners with a crown and-scepters tool. Corners…bumped. The spine, sometime rebacked with the original original backstrip laid down, four raised bands, the panels with a gilt flower in each. Joints starting. Head and toe of spine with chipped Marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplate of The Right Honourable Earl of Inchquin on the verso of the title page. Overall a very good copy in an attractive binding. Edward Edmonson (d. 1786) Herald and genealogist, he was originally apprenticed to be a barber, but afterwards became a coach-painter, and being much employed in emblazoning coat-armour on carriages was led to the study of heraldry and genealogy, both of which he wrote a number of books. First edition, engraved throughout and printed for the author, an invaluable guide to the stratigraphy of Georgian society, which includes a section on the 'Precedency of Women'. Joseph Edmondson was an artist of humble origins who had begun his career as a coach-painter, and became coach-painter to Queen Charlotte in 1763. 'On…21 January 1764, thanks to the support of the new deputy earl marshal, Lord Suffolk, Edmondson was created Mowbray herald of arms extraordinary, although he continued his successful coach-painting business until his death.' (Oxford DNB). Precedency gives tables of precedency of British men and women and provides a list of 'collar days' on which those entitled may wear their official "collars" indicating precedency. The book was reprinted in a second edition c. 1785. Small 8vo (130 × 91 mm), ff. [ii], 14, engraved title and all text. Slight browning/offsetting from leather turn-ins. Contemporary calf, expertly and sympathetically rebacked. Old booskeller's label (G.A. Poynder, Reading).

No Jacket. 4 in. x 5 1/2 in., engraved title-page with the Price of Wales emblem, followed by the elaborate, calligraphic engraved dedication page, and 14 engraved plates, which are the pages of engraved text, with engraving on one side only. Bound in full, old speckled calf with four raised band…s on the spine, each with double-line gilt borders to the bands, and across the upper and lower spine, book cover edges show gilt-tooling, book edges are sprinkled red. This type of binding is contemporary with the engraved text. Spine ends and cover corners and edges show some wear, rubbing. The front cover shows the title: Precedency, written out in ink, and an ink stain above this inscription, endpapers show age-related tanning, some tanning, dusting to title-page, plate (page) margins. One of the few books published in England, where the entire text was printed from copperplate engravings; the dedication page shows several types of calligraphic writing, that was carefully engraved. Joseph Edmondson, was an amateur genealogist, who was employed in painting heraldic coats-of-arms on carriage doors; in 1764 he was created Mowbray herald extraordinary, and was also elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. Precedency of Men (From the King to the Burgesses; p. 1-5); Precedency of Women (From the Queen to Wives of Burgesses; pp 6-9); Procession to the Chapel Royal (pp. 10-13; this included mention of Sir Robert Walpole, K.B. as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1726), on p. 10); Collar Days & Offering Days, from the Lord Chamberlains Office (p. 14).
