"Pretty Polly & Other Stories" is a 1964 collection of three short stories (sometimes called novelettes) written by the celebrated English playwright and author Noël Coward. Known for his characteristic charm and wit, Coward explores themes of social status, love, and aging through the lens of mid-20th-century characters. Amazon The collection contains three distinct "long" short stories: "Pretty Polly": Also known as "Pretty Polly Barlow," it follows the transformation of a mousy shopgirl into a sophisticated woman. This story was famously adapted into the 1967 film A Matter of Innocence (also known as Pretty Polly) starring Hayley Mills. "Mrs. Capper's Birthday": A story that examines the life and musings of a woman facing her own birthday while reflecting on the deaths of relatives and spouses. "Me and the Girls": A narrative that explores the lives and sexual adventures of chorus girls, described by readers as having an "authentic voice" and sharp humor. Goodreads Critical Reception Writing Style: Reviewers on Goodreads note that Coward's prose is filled with his trademark "acid pen," featuring social schemers and camp references while maintaining a focus on characters seeking love. Historical Context: While the stories use some dated slang, readers often find them humorous enough to remain engaging today. Literary Merit: One reviewer on Goodreads highlights that the dialogue in the film adaptations is remarkably close to the original text, showcasing Coward's strength in writing conversation. Goodreads First published in the UK in 1964 by William Heinemann, the book saw its first American edition in 1965 through Doubleday. Bookseller Inventory # BD1-012-00233. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. 8vo. Green and blue cloth with blue spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 227pp. Near fine/very good. Touch of minor edgewear to bright jacket. Lovely and tight first edition of this short story trio (the others being "Mrs. Capper's Birthday" and "Me and the Girls") by the debonair English dramatist, writer, composer, director, actor and singer whose best work epitomizes sophisticated wit and urbanity. This sharp copy bears his bold, eccentric signature in blue ink on inner flyleaf. This most unusual copy, though, also bears three autograph additions: Each of these stories inspired a film version, and the signature of a film cast member from each -- all on fine, matching, heavy stock 4¼" X 3" cards -- is tipped to the blank leaf preceding the individual title pages of each. "Pretty Polly" inspired a British television film version, and tipped in is a large, bold signature in blue ink of LYNN REDGRAVE (1943-2010, portrays title character Polly Barlow), who dates it 24 March 1971 at upper right. "Mrs. Capper's Birthday" inspired a 1985 television film, and tipped in is a large, bold signature in blue ballpoint of MAX WALL (1908-90, portrays Mr. Godsall), who dates it 3 July 1981 at upper right. "Me and the Girls" likewise inspired a 1985 television film, and tipped in is a large, bold signature in blue ballpoint of TOM COURTENAY (b. 1937, portrays George Banks), who dates it 28 February 1969 and below his signature inscribes it "Good wishes, / Richard." Kroch's & Brentano's "1st Edition Circle" bookmark laid in, as are Redgrave, Wall and Courtenay's original transmittal envelopes. Quite an intriguing copy.

With the bookplate of Sir Michael Holroyd and inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Dear Michael, Since my short stories are among your favourites of my writings, and you are the most discerning of my critics, I charge you to see to it, with the energy and insistence that is yours, that in any future edition of Pretty Creatures the corrections I have made in these pages are all included - to placate my unquiet ghost; and may you live long and your genius prosper! William. London, April, 1961"; signed by the author on the title-page and with his autograph corrections on pp. 4, 17, 18, 19, 20, 30, 31, 41, 49, 53, 61, 63, 65, 71, 105, 119, 129, 130, 132, 133, 136, 137, 141, 142 and 183. "DEDICATED IN THE ABSENCE OF NAPOLEON BUONAPARTE TO WILLIAM MAXWELL BARON BEAVERBROOK". William Gerhardie (né William Alexander Gerhardi, 1895-1977) got to know Michael Holroyd, almost 40 years his junior, through Christina Street, daughter of his brother Victor Gerhardi. Dido Davies, Gerhardie's biographer, tells the story: "In 1956 Michael Holroyd, a young man doing military service, had come across Gerhardie's books by chance and read most of them. As coincidence would have it Holroyd's mother knew Gerhardie's niece Christina. 'I thought William Gerhardie must be dead', Holroyd later remarked. 'In fact I discovered he was merely buried alive.'" They met, and became friends. Gerhardie was still alive when Holroyd supervised the Revised Definitive Edition of Pretty Creatures in 1974. To judge from the first story, "Tristan und Isolde", the author did make the odd change to his text, but enforced none of those he had proposed to Holroyd in 1961. "[Hugh] Kingsmill," wrote Holroyd, "like many lonely people, compartmentalised his life, so it was not surprising that his two closest friends over twenty-five years should have met each other only once. William Gerhardie was utterly unlike [Hesketh] Pearson, and the most eccentric person I have ever met. Both shared a love of literature and landscape, but whereas Pearson in his direct and upright manner would set off on long vigorous walks in the footsteps of Johnson and Boswell and other favourite characters, his head teeming with lines from Shakespeare and his own explosive phrases bursting with alliterations and assertions, Gerhardie would stay immovably indoors dreaming of what might lie beyond the curtained windows. 'It ' a lovely day,' a friend remarked one morning. 'Is it?' he replied eagerly, remaining seated with his back to the window." John Middleton Murry, widower of Gerhardie's early supporter Katherine Mansfield, was The Times Literary Supplement's anonymous reviewer of Pretty Creatures. He only approved of one of the five stories, "A Bad End", and tartly concluded, "[I]f [Mr Gerhardi] will resolutely ignore his own mannerisms, he may one day write a fine instead of a merely clever book.".
