Mass Market. Condition: Very Good. FIRST VINTAGE EDITION. 283 Pages. Vintage books Edition May 1973 # V-913. . Light wear to covers. Dozens of the pages have pencil underlining. In this masterly study in introspection, Willa Cather tells the story of a scholarly professor in a Middle Western university, passing through the critical, uneasy period between middle age and old age. Reluctant to move into a new, more comfortable house, he remains in the old room he has been used to working in, despite the protestations of his wife and daughters. The reader finds him a man in his middle fifties at the zenith of his intellectual powers-yet now suffering the dislocations of a life that has changed too quickly, too harshly. Contents in Three Books: The Family, Tom Outland's Story, and The Professor.

Their fascination w/ the American Southwest, early Canada & Catholicism reflects the older Cather's search for alternatives to the grasping civilization she felt was increasingly replacing the spirit of the early pioneers. * ABOUT WILLA CATHER: Born in Virginia in 1873 & raised on a Nebraska ranch, Willa Cather is known for her beautifully evocative short stories & novels about the American West. Cather became the managing editor for McClure's Magazine in 1906 & lived for 40 years in New York City w/ her companion Edith Lewis. In 1922 Cather won the Pulitzer Prize for "One of Ours", the story of a Western boy in World War I. In 1933 she was awarded the Prix Femina Americaine for distinguished literary accomplishments.
