A history of the company is followed by a description of the manufacturing process and 'A Few Remarks to the Retail Trade' which highlights the benefits of margarine over butter. Monsted, a Dane, opened the first margarine factory in Denmark in 1883 and in 1889 he opened a small factory in Godley near Hyde in Cheshire. Such was the demand for margarine new premises were needed and in 1893 land was acquired in Southall near London and what was to become the largest margarine factory in the world was built. It opened in March 1895. In 1902 the Godley factory was acquired by hugely successful British dairy company The Maypole Dairy Co, who then subsequently acquired the Southall factory in 1915. A sticker to the front pastedown advises that Godley factory was sold again in November 1914, together with Monsted's wholesale trade, and the company's name was changed to Maypole Margarine Works Limited on 1 January 1915. In 1929 the Southall factory was sold to Lever Brothers for the production of sausages under the Wall's brand. The factory closed in 1970s and, apart from its façade, was demolished in the 1980s.
