Chr.; kämpfte bei Marathon und Salamis, errang 484 den ersten seiner 13 Siege im Tragiker-Agon an den Großen Dionysien, führte als Gast Hierons von Syrakus (nach 471) die »Frauen von Aitne« auf und ging (nach 458) wieder nach Sizilien. Mit Aischylos' Dramen beginnt die europäische tragische Dichtung. Aischylos ließ die Handlung stärker hervortreten und setzte sie in innere Beziehung zum Chor. Statt des einen, dem Chor respondierenden Schauspielers ließ er zwei, später wie Sophokles drei einen dramatischen Dialog führen. Von Aischylos stammt die Verbindung dreier Stücke zu einer inhaltlich geschlossenen Trilogie (mit dem Satyrspiel zur Tetralogie). Aischylos zeigt, wie Menschen kaum vermeidbar in Verblendung und Verfehlung geraten und dennoch für ihr Handeln verantwortlich bleiben, auch wenn eine Gottheit »mitursächlich« wirkt. Andererseits lässt Aischylos Zeus als alles beherrschende Macht auftreten und den Menschen durch Leiden lernen (»Agamemnon«). Da im Drama des Aischylos alles Geschehen von den Göttern bestimmt wird, ist es keine Schicksalstragödie im neuzeitlichen Sinn. Aischylos' großen, auch grüblerischen Gedanken entspricht seine erhabene, sinnschwere Sprache. Von seinen wohl 90 Tragödien sind nur sieben erhalten: »Perser« (zuerst aufgeführt 472), »Sieben gegen Theben« (467), »Schutzflehende« (463?), die Orestie (»Agamemnon«, »Choephoren«, »Eumeniden«, zuerst aufgeführt 458), »Gefesselter Prometheus« (Datierung unsicher).
