Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. "Silas the Chore Boy" is a comic romance ? a character play in dialect. The characters are country folk of rustic demeanor and speech. the cast includes one black character, Cinch, described as "a Son of Ham". "The action of the play is supposed to take place at Elmsford, Maine, during the spring of 1904." This is the scarce 1906 edition of the melodrama, "Silas the Chore Boy", published by Samuel French. It is a stage prompt book, meant to be used by cast members. There seem to be various copies of the Walter Baker Company reprint (1935) on the market, but I find no other copies of the Samuel French edition being offered for sale on line. SERIES : French's American Acting Edition, No. 5. TITLE : Silas the Chore Boy, A Romance of New England. AUTHOR : Frank H. Bernard. IMPRINT : Samuel French & Son. PLACE : New York. DATE : 1906 (İ 1906) EDITION : First Edition. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Paperback; 78 pages; 4 1/2" x 7 1/2", printed salmon colored wraps, stapled and glued (paper covers) - rear exterior and insides of cover present publisher's list CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following noted: EXTERIOR : The cover paper is intact, but likely fragile It remains clean and presentable, with the following noted: modest weathering and edge wear, including nicking and small loss at corner tips - there is a tiny open tear to the bottom edge of the rear cover - a shallow crease runs vertically up the center - spine has splitting and small loss to foot - evidence of mending to spine - slight discoloration from staples - small, near-negligible spotting - else clean and presentable. / INTERIOR : Page corner creases -- a few small - the vertical crease on the exterior follows through the leaves for about 30 pages - mild surface rumple to paper - staples exhibit rust and the paper next to them is discolored - else clean and presentable (it's quite obvious this book was used - I try to imagine someone, holding this stage book in hand, struggling with the lines of their role.) Character Identifications (unfortunate racial stereotyping included - par for the course in that time): HIRAM RIDLEY ? who believes in the Golden Rule ARTHUR RIDLEY ? his son GERALD BLAKE ? a wolf in sheep's clothing SILAS STEBBINS ? Chore boy; that's all CINCH ? a son of Ham , with very heavy 'Negro' dialect JED PERKINS ? the town constable CECIL DARE ? who loves not wisely, but too well PERT RIDLEY ? who knows a thing or two, and proves it NANCY RIDLEY ? Hiram's maiden sister The synopsis of the play given in the front of the book is curious, and speaks to the depiction of the characters and colorful local dialect: ACT 1. Aunt Nancy's dilemma.- "Why, Jed Perkins, yeour tew slow tew catch a cold!" - Cecil's escape. - "Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone!" - Arthur defends the weak, -"Your life shall pay for this!" - The quarrel. -"What have I done?" - "You have murdered my son!" ACT II. Aunt Nancy's dislike for 'yaller-covered novels'. -"If I ketch yew a readin' sich litrature agin, there'll be a new chore boy on the Ridley place!" - Arrival of the Doctor. - The story. -"Are you the wife of Gerald Blake?" - Cecil's silence almost betrays her. - "If she leaves this house, father, then so shall I!"- The midnight interview. - The struggle for the papers. - "Drop those papers, Doc, or I'll be mighty apt to drop you!" // ACT III. Silas declares that he will be a cowboy. - Pert interviews him on the subject. - "I can see you now, lying on the prairie, rolled in your blanket!" - Blake and Cinch plan for a final attempt to wrest the paper from Cecil. - "When he appears in that door, you fire!" - The fatal shot. - Death of Blake. - "Who are you?" - "I am Cecil Blake!" - "Forget the past! Cecil Blake is dead, and from his ashes, Cecil Dare emerges into the sunlight of peace and happiness!".

Format is 5.5 inches by 9.25 inches. More than fifty years later, the decision that brought prompt and utter destruction to the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki continues to generate enormous interest and controversy. In this concise and balanced account, J. Samuel Walker offers a new look at the events and circumstances that lay behind President Truman's use of atomic bombs against Japan. Combining extensive documentary research with a critical reading of both American and Japanese scholarship, Walker examines the popular mythology about how the decision was made, delineating what was known and not known by American leaders at the time and evaluating the role of U.S.-Soviet relations and American domestic politics. Rising above an often polemical debate, he presents an accessible synthesis of previous work and an important, original contribution to our understanding of the events that ushered in the atomic age. J. Samuel Walker is an American historian and author based in Maryland, most notable for his research and writing on the nuclear age, both weaponry and atomic energy. Several of his books have earned broad-based critical acclaim and advanced novel viewpoints. Despite affiliation with government and the nuclear industry, he is cited by the peace movement and parties who are highly critical of nuclear energy. Walker was a history instructor at the University of Maryland in the mid-seventies but was hired by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in June, 1979, working under the chief historian, George T. Mazuzan. Walker was able to write in a lucid manner applauded in popular science press. Roger Chapman, writing in Bowling Green's university press, characterized the book on the atomic bombing of Japan as "a brave attempt to bridge two diametrically opposed positions" about whether the bombings were necessary, justified or humane.
