Blind-tooled borders along joints and raised bands. Engraved frontispiece. Woodcut vignettes on title-pages. Titles in red and black lettering. Decorative… head-, and tailpieces. Decorative initials. 11 (of 19) copper engraved architectural plates on mostly folding sheets. Rare and fascinating works bound together. In his commentaries, Cocceio tries to formulate a dogmatic biblical aspect closer to faith than to theological speculation. To speak of the relationship between God and humanity, Cocceio uses more readily the concept of Covenant, thus interpreting the relationship between God and creation in a dynamic way. Cocceio defines the pact as "nothing but a divine declaration on the method of perceiving the love of God and obtain union and communion with him". Although it has been established on the initiative of God, the pact requires the response of man. As in previous development of covenant theology, Cocceio draws a distinction between the covenant of works and covenant of grace. The climax of the series of pacts gives a strong character in his eschatological system. His historical interpretation of the Old Testament leads, among other things, to deny that the commandment to observe the Sabbath is stipulated in the earthly paradise. These and other ideas, lead to disputes which continued until after his death. His followers later combined his theological system with the Cartesian philosophy, the so-called "Cocceio-Cartesian school". Cocceio's commentaries on various books of the 'Old Testament and his Hebrew Lexicon (1669), have been widely used in Reformed circles until the nineteenth century. Cocceio had a significant influence on Franz Burmann (1628 - 1679) and Herman Witsius (1636 - 1708). Cocceio died of plague in 1669. Modern binding in excellent condition. Tiny scratch on title-label on spine. Minor and sporadic browning throughout. Slight creasing on outer margin of plates. Out of the 19 original plates representing the Temple, 8 are missing (III, V, VII, VIII, XII, XIV, XVI, XVIII). One plate is detached but present. Text in Latin. Binding in overall near fine, interior in very good condition.

A la suite du succès de l'édition in-4 en 4 volumes dont l'impression s'étala de 1539 à 1544, cette édition miniature constituée de dix-sept parties fut publiée entre 1544 et 1546;… chaque volume, complet en soit, comportait sa propre page de titre, sans mention de volumaison et était ainsi acquis séparément. Belle marque d'imprimeur ainsi qu'un encadrement gravé.Seule la page de titre est bilingue (latin-hébreu). «Cette petite édition que l'on dit fort exacte, est vraiment un bijou typographique, et peut-être ce qui a jamais été imprimé de plus beau en langue hébraïque.» (A. Renouard,Annales de l'imprimerie des Estienne) Reliure postérieure (1590-1615) en plein maroquin brun, dos lisse orné de filets dorés, plats encadrés de doubles filets et poinçons dorés, toutes tranches dorées. Légers frottements. Cette édition, s'appuyant sur l'édition princeps hébraïque publiée par Soncino en 1488, est réalisée par l'humaniste François Vatable. Le texte, intégralement en hébreu, suit la tradition massorétique et présente des diacritiques facilitant sa vocalisation. Exégète de talent, François Vatable (1495-1547) «pionnier des études hébraïques de la Renaissance française» (Y. Sordet, Histoire du livre et de l'édition) fut membre du Cénacle de Meaux de Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples et réalisa pour lui en 1509, la traduction en latin de l'Hebraïcum, l'un des cinq psautiers du Quincuplex Psalterium publiépar Henri Estienne. François Ier, à la fondation du Collège de France en 1530 lui confia la chaire d'hébreu. Près de dix ans plus tard, et toujours en qualité de professeur d'hébreu, il travailla aux côtés de Robert Estienne (1503-1559) - éditeur du Roi pour le latin et l'hébreu - sur les textes hébraïques de la Bible. Le format de cet ouvrage, véritable prouesse typographique pour une édition en caractères hébraïques, et la possibilité d'acquérir chaque volume séparément, en font une publication sans doute destinée aux étudiants de la Sorbonne et du Collège Royal. Cette hypothèse peut être confortée par la présence de nombreuses notes marginales du temps ainsi que la numérotation des lignes de plusieurs pages dans certains des volumes en notre possession. Elaborate printer's woodcut device on each title page with book titles set within woodcut cartouche head-pieces. Only the title page is in Latin-Hebrew. Numerous contemporary Latin annotations, certainly by a scholar.
