Edizione originale. This is the first quarto edition of the same work published as folio earlier), bound together with "The Baths of the Romans". Two works with a total of over 230 plates, (including many fold-outs) illustrating a large part of the architectural works created by Palladio and his studies of classical architecture. --- The volume dealing with the 'Baths of the Romans' present here is rather rare and very often missing, which is why few complete series exist. First Italian edition in 4to, abridged copy of the major work published in Vicenza by the same printer in 1776-1783, containing Palladio's entire work, edited by the architect Bertotti Scamozzi (Vicenza 1719-1790). --- --- Beautiful clean copy with 5 volumes bound in 2 volumes. Later marbled hardback binding with gold title on a tag on the smooth spine. The frontispiece is a portrait of Palladio drawn by Davide Rossi and engraved by Pietro Bonato. 208 copper-engraved plates and mostly fold-outs on 207 sheets, plate 33 is missing, (almost always missing), . --- Copy also contains 'The Baths of the Romans' drawn by Andrea Palladio and republished with the addition of some observations by Ottavio Bertotti Scamozzi in 1797 with a portrait of Palladio and 25 copper-engraved plates by Antonio Mugnoni and partly folded. Good state of conservation of the work. In VERY GOOD condition. Some pages are uncot. Light foxing on only a fe pages. Otherwise very clean, printed on very good paper. ---- ---- Palladio is best known for his Quattro Libri dell'Architettura (The Four Books of Architecture), published in 1570 and considered the foundation of modern architecture. This edition was published in Vicenza (the city where Palladio practiced) and was edited by Ottavio Bertotti Scamozzi, who began studying Palladio's work in 1776. These books are part of the 1796 edition of the complete collection of the architectural works of Andrea Palladio, one of the greatest architects of the Renaissance. Andrea Palladio, pseudonym of Andrea di Pietro della Gondola (Padua, November 30, 1508 Maser, August 19, 1580), was an Italian architect, architectural theorist and scenographer of the Renaissance, citizen of the Republic of Venice. Influenced by Greco-Roman architecture, especially by Vitruvius, he is considered one of the most influential personalities in the history of Western architecture. He was the most important architect of the Venetian Republic, in whose territory he designed numerous villas that made him famous, as well as churches and palaces, the latter mainly in Vicenza, where he trained and lived. He published the treatise The Four Books of Architecture (1570) through which his models had a profound influence on Western architecture; the imitation of his style gave rise to a movement destined to last for three centuries, Palladianism, which harks back to the principles of classical antiquity. Most of his buildings are protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, called City of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto. Andrea Palladio's cultural education took place under the guidance and tutelage of the humanist Gian Giorgio Trissino dal Vello d'Oro, probably the most prominent intellectual in a city where the most famous artist at the time was Valerio Belli, an engraver, in contact with Michelangelo Buonarroti and Raffaello Sanzio, and whose house had so amazed Vasari. Gian Giorgio Trissino, a cultured and refined nobleman, a scholar of the Italian language and an amateur architect, in 1535 wanted to renovate his villa on the outskirts of Vicenza, purchased by his father Gaspare in 1482: in designing the main façade facing south he drew inspiration from Raphael's solutions for Villa Madama, with a loggia with double arches placed between two turrets, one of which pre-existed: the tower at the side of a body composed of a portico with a loggia on the upper floor is a typical scheme of 15th-century Vicenza architecture. Trissino breaks with this tradition and, in keeping with the humanistic and neoplatonic spirit, composes the interior spaces following a rigorously proportional and symmetrical scheme: the lateral rooms are linked to each other by a system of interrelated proportions 1:1; 2:3; 1:2. In this way Trissino anticipated the model that would later become a significant feature of the organization of the rooms with Palladio. Tradition has it that among the workers employed in the works was the young Andrea, noted by Trissino for his ability. It was Gian Giorgio Trissino himself who took him with him to Rome on his educational trips in contact with the classical world and introduced him to the Vicenza aristocracy. This is the small quarto edition of the same work published in folio in 1796.

AN UNUSUALLY FINE AND HANDSOME COPY OF THIS RARE BOOK. THE FIFTH VOLUME IS RARELY ENCOUNTERED AND SETS OF THE FOUR ARE OFTEN LACKING A VOLUME OR A NUMBER OF PLATES. THIS IS AN ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE COPY, COMPLETE IN ALL RESPECTS. Rossi's printing of 1796-1797 is a fine and beautiful quarto edition of the master's four books on architecture with additions provided in the fifth volume. Palladio's designs and work to this day remain the central pillar of classical architecture and all architecture which followed. Such early antique editions are truly scarce and here retains its original sophistication. 'Palladio's lasting influence on architectural style in many parts of the world was exercised less through his actual buildings than through this, his textbook. The book is divided into four sections: orders and elementary problems, domestic building, public building and own planning and temples. Palladio's style was directly inspired by Roman classical models through the writings of Vitruvius and Alberti. Its characteristics are those of classicism: symmetry, order, fixed mathematical relations of the parts to each other and to the whole, logic and monumentality. Palladio followed the rules of classical Roman architecture more closely than any other architect. In spite of the vogue for the baroque and the fact that Palladio left no immediate successors, his book exerted a powerful influence on contemporary architecture and classical ideals until the end of the eighteenth century. As a practicing architect Palladio worked mainly in Vicenza, Venice and the Venetian countryside, especially along the Brenta River. His Villa Capra (known as La Rotonda) near Vicenza became virtually a prototype of the Palladian style, and it was widely and faithfully copied. At the end of his life he left plans for the tour de force of trompe l'oeil, the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, which was finished by his pupil Vincenzo Scamozzi.' PMM 92 In 1732-1733, Ware's English edition was produced with the assistance of Lord Burlington and it surpassed all earlier English editions in its faithfulness to the original. A very skilled draughtsman and engraver, Ware exactly traced and engraved the plates for his edition from Palladio's original drawings in Burlington's collection. The additional fifth volume, here provided emanates from these drawings in Lord Burlington's collection. As for the Englishman Ware (d. 1766)--he is reported "to have been originally a chimney-sweeper's boy whom an unknown patron found drawing with chalk at Whitehall. He was sketching the elevation of the banquet house upon the basement walls of the building itself, and is said to have made similar sketches of the portico at St. Martin's-in-the-Fields" (DNB). He developed into an eminently competent architect, among whose works were counted Chesterfield House, South Audley Street, of which Philip Dormer Stanhope, fourth earl of Chesterfield, took possession in 1749; he also built, for his own use, No. 6 Bloomsbury Square, which was inhabited later by Isaac D'Israeli. Rossi's is an excellent presentation of Palladio's magnificent work. A remarkably fresh and clean survival with plates beautifully struck and this copy with fine dark images. The text in excellent order as well.

Con 10 tavole calcografiche e all'acquatinta fuori testo, opera di Ladislaus Rupp e Giuseppe Castellini, fra cui una veduta del duomo, collazionata all'antiporta. Frontespizio con caratteri calligrafici impressi da Prada. Fresca impressione, esemplare a buoni margini.
