12mo. x, [2], 204 pp. Original full mottled calf, gilt-stamp of Camperdown Library; joints cracked. Very good. Pirated issue, issued without a date on the title, matches the imprint for the 1748 issue but collates differently. The book was popular in pirated editions, so "for many years every genuine copy bore the signature of Hoyle." This issue is neither signed by Hoyle nor the publisher Osborne. / "In 1748, Osborne stopped publishing the individual treatises, but instead sold a collected edition under the title Mr. Hoyle's Games of Whist, Quadrille, Piquet, Chess, and Back-gammon. [Wikip.]. The title of this issue suggests that the original price for the volume was 3 shillings. / "Hoyle and his teaching are spoken of in the Gentleman's Magazine of February 1755, in Fielding's Tom Jones, in Alexander Thomson's poem on 'Whist' (1792), and in Byron's Don Juan, which first appeared in 1821 . . . Hoyle was the first to write scientifically on whist, or indeed any card game. His Short Treatise soon became popular. He was a careless editor, but possessed a vigorous style of writing and much originality. He seems to have profited by the experience of the best players of the day, and introduced many improvements in his successive editions . . . The book has been frequently reprinted down to recent times. The word 'Hoyle' came to be used as representative of any book on games." â" DNB. "The text of the book is the same as Games.3 (1760) and lacks the additions found in Games.4 (1763). Noting the text, Julian Marshall writes "This, then, was not a piracy, but an edition printed, by arrangement with the proprietors, for Scotch circulation" and fixes the date between 1760 and 1763. (NQ 7.IX.142, February 22, 1890). Similarly, Jessel and Rather date the book 1762. However the earliest dated Mundell and Son imprint is 1789, and the earliest at the Royal Bank Close is 1792. My conclusion is that that the book was a late reprint of Hoyle and I am using a date of 1792 based on the printer's location. It is odd that Mundell chose the text of the superseded Games.3, but perhaps felt that later updates might be protected by copyright. It is also odd that Mundell used the original Osborne imprint on the title page." â" David Levy. REFERENCES: See: ESTC T88036; Jessel. F. A bibliography of works in English on playing cards and gaming, 805; Rather 46; 50; David Levy, A Descriptive Bibliography of Edmond Hoyle, Games.3.R.1 [two lines to left of brace] Printed by Mundell & Son, | Royal Bank Clo?e, Edinburgh']. NOTE: Pierpont Morgan copy, with the imprint date of 1748, collates totally differently: [4], 74, [3], 100-224, [15] pp. (No mention of this being signed). The evidence of the pagination gives to support that the present copy is pirated [i.e. as per Levy's imprint estimate of 1792].

Add to basketFirst edition, first printing. Inscribed presentation copy. Original grey cloth, the spine lettered in gilt to a black label, the author's signature stamped in gilt to the front panel, the publisher's monogram in blind to the lower edge of the rear panel, in dustwrapper. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the contents clean throughout. Fore- and upper page block edges a little toned, with a couple of tiny diagonal creases to the upper outer corners of a handful of pages. In the lightly toned dustwrapper, nicked to corners and spine tips, the rubbed upper spine edge with a couple of short (near) closed tears to the folds. Not price-clipped (25s net to the front flap). Altogether, a sound, presentable copy with an inscription showing the author's talent for wordplay. Inscribed by the author in red ink to the front free endpaper, "For Polly Mill / with, love / Noël". The recipient, homophonically addressed, is Paul-Emile Seidmann, a doctor married to Ginette Spanier, director of the House of Balmain, the fashion house founded by Pierre Balmain and patronised by such luminaries as Ava Gardner, Brigitte Bardot, and Marlene Dietrich. Coward met the couple while holidaying in France during the summer of 1946 and they became, according to the editors of Coward's diaries, the "closest of Noël's Parisian friends", amply borne out in the number of affectionate mentions of the couple in the diary itself. Philip Hoare, in his biography of Coward, notes that the author affectionately nicknamed Seidmann 'Marie-Antoinette'. Coward also smuggles Seidmann's name (without the final 'n') into his 1959 play 'Look After Lulu!' (an adaptation of a Feydeau farce) as 'Mayor of the District' (the name mentioned just once). ('The Noël Coward Diaries' edited by Graham Payn and Sheridan Morley [London, 1982]; Philip Hoare, 'Noël Coward: A Biography' [London, 1995]; Cole B-78).
