Chilopoden), auch durch das Fehlen des üblichen Praeses (wohl Beweis einer ganz eigenständigen Arbeit), stattdessen 3 Adversarii (J. Muenter, H. Wachsmuth, C. Bischoff); schließlich durch die luxuriöse Ausstattung: starkes, breitrandiges Papier; die Abbildungen in bis zu 450facher Vergrößerung. Die Arbeit ist seinem patri optimo: Carolo Guilielmo Stein nec non Joan. Henrico Deinhardt gewidmet, der vermutlich den Druck finanzierte. Seiten 53 und 54 mit ausführlicher Vita mit Nennung vieler akademischer Lehrer aus fast allen Gebieten. Stein war später an der Akademie für Forst- und Landwirtschaft in Tharand, dann Professor in Prag. Vergleiche Horn/Sch. Erste Ausgabe.- Reiner Bachoff von Echt (1575-1640) war Professor und Rektor in Heidelberg. Die Familie derer von Bachofen von Echt kam ursprünglich aus dem Herzogtum…Limburg und gehörte dort zum ritterbürtigen Uradel. Der Name des Geschlechtes verweist auf die Dörfer Bachofen und Echt, südlich von Roermond. 1325 wurde Konrad Bachhofen von Echt vom Grafen Berthold VII. von Henneberg mit einem Hof in der Grafschaft Henneberg (Thüringen) belehnt. Kaiser Karl V. bestätigte den Adelsstand und das Wappen der Familie mit einer Urkunde vom 24. März 1532. Das Geschlecht war stifts- und turnierfähig. Im 17. Jahrhundert waren Angehörige der Familie auch in Ingermanland begütert, verloren die Besitzungen aber durch Krieg bald wieder.- Das Exemplar aus der Bibliothek von Karl Adolf Ludwig Freiherr Bachofen von Echt (12. März 1830 in Oelde, Westfalen - 22. Mai 1922 Wien). Er war der Besitzer der Nußdorfer Bierbrauerei. 1872 wurde er zum Bürgermeister von Nussdorf gewählt und blieb dies für fast 20 Jahre, bis Nussdorf nach Wien eingemeindet wurde. Zwischen 1891 und 1895 war er liberales Mitglied des Wiener Gemeinderats.- Er schenkte das Buch seinem Sohn Reinhart Freiherr Bachofen von Echt (Nußdorf 1877 - 1947 in Graz). Mit seinem eigenh. Vermerk: "Erhalten von meinem Vater 1901". Reinhart Freiherr Bachofen von Echt war Heimwehrführer sowie Verfasser mehrerer Werke zur steirischen Jagdgeschichte. Er besaß auch Liegenschaften in der Steiermark, wie zum Beispiel das 1902 erworbene Schloss Murstätten im Gebiet der heutigen Gemeinde Lebring-Sankt Margarethen.- Innendeckel mit Bibl.-Schildchen: Familien-Archiv Bachoven von Echt, Bibliothek. Weiters mit Exlibris von Reinhart Freiherr Bachofen von Echt .- Papier durchgehend (tlw. stark) gebräunt und braunfleckig.

Large 7-line puzzle initial in red and blue with red penwork ornament extending to form a border, 1-line initials alternately red or blue. Contempo…rary wooden (beech?) boards covered with pink leather, each cover with five metal bosses in the corners and centre (somewhat battered). Housed in a black leather slipcase. An exceptional medieval manuscript of Gaspar of Verona's Latin grammar "Regulae de constructione", here in the earliest known dated copy, signed and dated by the scribe and preserved in its original binding. This manuscript was created during the lifetime of the author, and barely a day's ride from his hometown. - The "Regulae de constructione" is the first, or one of the first, Latin grammars wholly humanistic in character, characterized by the introduction of classical sources. The rise of the Humanism across Europe and re-discovery of classical texts, provided Verona the examples needed for the construction of his work. A very rare text, of which no modern edition exists. - This copy was unknown to Bursill-Hall's, Census of Medieval Latin Grammatical Manuscripts, which lists ten copies in Italian institutions, to which can be added one at the Beinecke Library (Marston MS 262). The script is a neat humanistic book hand signed and dated by the scribe at the end, establishing the manuscript's priority within the tradition. The unrestored contemporary binding, with pink skin over wooden boards and original metal bosses, is a striking survival of mid Quattrocento workshop practice. - A manuscript of notable importance for the history of humanist grammar and the early diffusion of Gaspar's text in the Veneto, likely close to the author's milieu. - Minor cockling and light stains to a few leaves; contemporary binding somewhat battered but unrestored and sound. Text in excellent condition. - 1) Written a decade before the death of the author, perhaps in his hometown, Verona: signed by the scribe below the end of the text, "Finis [added by another hand: Regularum Gaspareis] I. F. de Arzignano M(anu)P(ropria) de 1463" (fol. 55). Arzignano is less than 30 km from Verona, and it seems probable that the earliest copies of the text to be disseminated would be written in Verona, or nearby towns such as Vicenza and Mantua. - 2) Jacques Rosenthal, Munich, offered in his Cat. 29 (1902), no. 799, and again in his Cat. XLII (1906), no. 1382, priced 120 Marks. - 3) Dean P. Lockwood (1883-1965), of Haverford, PA, classicist, medievalist, collector; bought from him by: - 4) William H. Allen (1918-97), Philadelphia bookseller: a clipping from one of his catalogues stuck to the inner face of the front cover, in which the book is priced $100; obtained from him in 1947 by: - 5) Howard Lehman Goodhart (1884-1951), stockbroker and bibliophile: his leather book label inside upper cover. By descent to his daughter: - 6) Phyllis Goodhart Gordan (1913-94): her leather book label inside upper cover, MS 83. On deposit at Bryn Mawr, BMC 49. - P. O.
