This book is the fourth of five volumes in the Berkeley Physics Course. The course was brought about by a National Science Foundation grant following the Soviet Union's successful launch of Sputnik in 1957. This preliminary edition was released four years before the official first edition, and would have been used for a course that lasted the duration of one semester.
