The Treadwells, headed by the certifiably insane Robert and long-suffering Mattie, repeatedly sacrifice themselves and each other for no apparent good reasons but always with some father-against-son motivation that makes sense to the individual at the time. Inscribed by the author (as Amélie Troubetzkoy) to Edgar Sisson in 1916; signed on title page as Amélie Rives, with her newspaper obituary pasted on facing page. Sisson, a former magazine editor (most recently at Cosmopolitan), had joined the US foreign publicity effort during World War I to rouse international sympathy for American objectives. He was appointed the Russian representative of the United States Committee on Public Information. Rives had married Prince Pierre Troubetzkoy in 1896, after publishing this novel under her maiden name.

First edition of this work comprised of biographical portraits of Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Edison, Henry Ford, Lenin, Mussolini, and Calvin Coolidge.
