First edition. 6" x 9" oblong in plain yellow wrappers with pictorial dust jacket. 32 pages. Artwork by Emilie Toepperwein. Early children's story set in Fredericksburg, Texas, at Easter time. "The story goes that in the very early days a family of pioneer children were frightened on Easter Eve by seeing Indian campfires on the hills. Their mother quieted them. Oh, no! she said, not Indian fires, but rabbit fires burned there outside the town. The Easter Rabbit was coloring his eggs, she said, with kettles of flower-dye boiling above the flames they saw." From that day forward, there have been fires lighting the town of Fredericksburg on Easter Eve. A lovely little book, printed on light orange, light pink and yellow pastel paper with charming illustrations. Former owner's name neatly written on front free end paper and with very light bleeding to edges of both covers in lightly soiled dust jacket with light water stain to rear panel and with splitting to creases of dust jacket flap folds. Very good.
