Trade Paperback. Condition: FINE. First Edition. SIGNED by Author Karl Luckert on the title page. viii, 157pp. Like-new author's copy from the publisher. We acquired this along with Dr. Luckert's personal scholarly library, and he graciously signed all of his author-copy. Inaugural volume in Luckert's monograph series on Native American religion. 'This book owes its existence to a local crisis in Navajo religion. In 1971 a number of Navajos in the northwestern region of the Navajo Indian Reservation became concerned about the expanding waters of Lake Powell. The water level continued to rise and eventually intruded beneath Rainbow Bridge, a large natural sandstone arch in southern Utah. The Navajos sought assistance from a legal services office on the Reservation, claiming that important religious interests were being infringed by the flooding. The question was put to me, whether religious significance can indeed be documented for Rainbow Bridge. I thank Richard W. Hughes for his interest in the work of a historian of religions and for persuading me to investigate this matter independently?also Leland C. Wyman for referring this task to me . After some initial hesitations, about whether information and samples of this sacred tradition should ever be entrusted to tape recorders and to paper, all of our informants decided that the seriousness of the situation demanded that they risk the unprecedented. And even though the limits of conscience varied from one informant to another, their reasoning was generally this: 'The gods will not object when we, their people, try to protect their own sacred places and bodies.' So we thank Robert Long-Salt, Floyd Laughter, Buck Navajo, Ernest Nelson, Buster Hastiin Nez, Paul Goodman, and Lamar Bedonie for their contributions.' (From the intro.). Signed.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. First Edition; First Printing. Stated first edition. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, dated November 25, 1924. Dark blue cloth boards with gilt lettering on cover and spine. Moderate chipping, bumping, and rubbing to extremities; lettering is quite faded, especially on spine; subtle toning to spine; very mild soiling. No dust jacket. Text block has a gilt top stain and a deckle fore-edge. Early signs of cracking in hinges and a few gutters, but binding remains tight. Interior has light toning, mostly to endpapers. Includes 62 black-and-white photos on plates and three maps with the text, all present as called for. Charles L. Bernheimer (1864-1944) was a Manhattan-based businessman who funded and led 15 expeditions in the American Southwest between 1915 and 1936. Many of the trips were on behalf of the American Museum of Natural History and included notable figures such as John Wetherill, Ezekiel Johnson, and Earl Morris. This book recounts the expeditions conducted from 1921 to 1924 when the group explored the rugged terrain of the Rainbow Plateau and surrounding area while making numerous important geographical and archaeological discoveries.
