Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Very Good+ dj. Early printing. [good sound copy, a couple of teensy-weensy brown spots (like rust stains) at top edge of front cover, but no other significant blemishes; the jacket is modestly edgeworn, a little faded at the spine panel, with tiny tears at a couple of corners, a short closed tear at the bottom of the rear panel, a bit of creasing/wrinkling along the top edge of the front panel, and a couple of tiny and unobtrusive puncture-wounds]. One of the great one-shot works of mid-20th century American literature, "an epic novel of heroic proportions" set in a fictionalized Indiana county. Structured as "the story of a single day [July 4, 1892] in which are imbedded a series of flashbacks," covering the years between 1844 and 1892, it's underpinned, alas, by the tragedy of the author's early death by suicide just two months after the book's publication, as related movingly in John Leggett's 1974 book "Ross and Tom: Two American Tragedies," a dual biography of Lockridge and Thomas Heggen, the author of "Mister Roberts." MGM filmed Lockridge's book in 1957, with the hope of replicating the success of GONE WITH THE WIND; it didn't, despite a stellar cast including Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift, and Eva Marie Saint. An unstated printing, but quite early: the jacket bears the same original price ($3.95) as the first printing, and the rear panel biography of Lockridge makes no reference to his death. ****NOTE that additonal postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this moderately heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.****. Illustrated by (dj) John V. Morris (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First English edition. Near fine, with some page corners bumped, in a very good dustwrapper with some rubbing to the extremities and a tear at the top of the front panel. Lockridge's only book, an excellent novel set during one day in the life of an Indiana school principal, and which manages to convey a sense of a specific time and place that has rarely been matched in American literature. Transformed into a troubled film with Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor. Lockridge somewhat mysteriously committed suicide about a month after publication of the book.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good-. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. 8vo. Published by Houghton Mifflin Company, Cambridge, MA. 1948. 1066 pgs. Maps. First Edition/First Printing. Unclipped John Mowis DJ has light shelf-wear, rubbing present to the DJ especially around the extremities (DJ has light shelfwear present to the edges of the DJ). Bound in green cloth with titles present to the spine and gilt tree present to the front board. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks, binding tight and solid. Throughout a single day in 1892, John Shawnessy recalls the great moments of his lifefrom the love affairs of his youth in Indiana, to the battles of the Civil War, to the politics of the Gilded Age, to his homecoming as schoolteacher, husband, and father. Shawnessy is the epitome of the place and period in which he lives, a rural land of springlike women, shady gamblers, wandering vagabonds, and soapbox orators. Yet here on the banks of the Shawmucky River, which weaves its primitive course through Raintree County, Indiana, he also feels and obeys ancient rhythms. A number-one bestseller when it was first published in 1948, this powerful novel is a compelling vision of 19th-century America with timeless resonance today. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1066 pages.
