Hill was the secretary of the Working Lads' Institute which opened on 31st October 1885, the same year that this book was published. The sturdy building still stands, in Whitechapel Road, close to the underground station. It's principally known as the place where several inquests into the Jack the Ripper murders were held. Rambles and Scrambles in the Tyrol is his travelogue, from London to Bavaria, and high up into the mountains and beyond, including Lake Garda.
