Add to basketHardback. Condition: Good to Very Good. First Edition. 1919. First edition. 68pp., frontispiece portrait and 5 of 7 other listed black and white illustrations (2 missing). Kenneth Campbell Macdonald (1897-1916) was born at Greenock, enlisted in October 1915 and served on the front lines in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. He was part of the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from June 3rd 1916, and killed in action at Beaumont Hamel, part of the Battle of the Somme, on November 13th 1916. He also had a talent for poetry and was published under the pen name 'Ard Var'. This collection of his poems also contains a sketch of his life and extracts from his letters. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with white titling on the front board. The case of the book is in good to very good condition with shelf wear and light soiling on the boards. The corners and spine ends are bumped and the spine is slightly cocked. There is a split of about 3/8" in the cloth at the top of the front spine edge. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few scattered small stains and marks from finger smudges, etc., and some more noticeable staining on pages 14 and 15. There is light to moderate foxing throughout and the book is missing 2 of the listed illustrations. The illustration facing page 11 has probably been loose in the past and tipped-in by a previous owner and has a little soiling on the fore and bottom edges and some creasing on the bottom edge. The endpapers are foxed with some soiling and the top corner of the rear free endpaper has been torn away. There is no inscription.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good +. No Jacket. First Edition. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by author. The author's poems, each of which is dated and includes a note about when/where it was written. Poems run from 1905 to 1951. The book is undated, but with the last poem dated 1951, and the author's inscription dated 1952, this is circa 1951-52. Few light exterior marks. DATED, INSCRIBED & SIGNED BY AUTHOR. Book.
