Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. [JENNER, EDWARD.] "An inquiry into the causes and effects of the variolae vaccinae, Recherches sur l'origine & les effets d'une maladie connue dans quelques Comtés de l'Angleterre, & particulierement dans Gloucestershire, sous le nom de Petite vérole des vaches." in the "Bibliotheque Britannique, ou Recueil Extrait des Ouvrages Anglais periodiques et autres; des Memoires et Transactions des Societes et Academies de la Grande-Bretagne, d'Asie, d'Afrique et d'Amerique." Geneva, 1798, volume 9, 400pp, 4 folding tables not related to the Jenner, (paginated (3)-400, complete). First publication in French, and first printing of this epochal paper in translation, following its first appearance in London in 1798. The translation and thus popularization of Jenner in Europe was the work of the celebrated Genevan/Swiss Dr. Louis Jean Odier (1748-1817), who also introduced the word "vaccine" to the continent and the first time the word appears in French. The Jenner appears on pp 258-284 and is continued and completed on pp 367-399. [++] Bound very tightly in paper covered boards. The binding is very strong and the text exceptionally clean and crisp.I even consider the margins to be somewhat generous (not by a lot, but noticeable). Overall a very strong copy of a great classic, one of the all-time high achievements in the history of medicine. [++] After a short paper describing his results was rejected for publication in 1797, Jenner published a much longer and complete version in 1798 as "An Inquiry into the Causes and Effects of the Variolae Vaccinae, a disease discovered in some of the western counties of England, particularly Gloucestershire and Known by the Name of Cow Pox." It initially met mostly with yawning attention, but the ideas soon became accepted, with much of England attuned to the idea of vaccination before the end of the year. " "Following the publication of Jenner s book the practice of vaccination was adopted and spread with astonishing speed."--Complete DSB online. [++] "Jenner must be considered the founder of immunology; in vaccination he made the first use of an attenuated virus for immunization. For his coining of the term virus" his effort to describe the natural history of the cowpox virus, and his description of anaphylaxis, he must be considered the first pioneer of the modern science of virology."--Complete DSB online. First French version, and the first translation at all of this important work in the history of medicine, being the foundation of all subsequent work in immunology and virology. Published the same year as the English original."On the basis of an old country tradition that milkmaids who had contracted cowpox were not susceptible to smallpox, Jenner, an English country physician, decided to experiment by injecting cowpox-infected lymph into a local boy. After inoculation the boy was found to be immune to smallpox and Jenner continued his experiments. In 1798 he published the present epochal work, the results of a long and successful series of case histories. By 1803 his work had been translated into numerous languages and his method of immunization was taken up with amazing speed, becoming almost universally adopted. Garrison has called Jenner's work "one of the greatest triumphs in the history of medicine" (Fielding H. Garrison, An introduction to the history of medicine).Heirs of Hippocrates: 1086. - Garrison & Morton 5423" Osler 1251 Waller 5136 Wellcome III, p. 351 - PMM, 250. - Dibner, 127. - Milestones of Science, 112. - Hiorblit, 56.
