First edition. The second, "The World in the Red Barn," is an ambiguous story about an old Maine codger who is either mad or a god creating a new world in his barn. Donald McCormick (1911-1998) was a British journalist and popular historian. In this book, he looks at the murder of Maria Marten in Polstead in 1827. Maria Martin has arranged to meet her lover, William Corder. After months of delay, they are to travel to Ipswich to be married. But she is mourning the loss of their child only weeks before and is exhausted and confused. She has been promised so much before by other men and no longer knows which way to turn. She enters the Red Barn and is never seen again. The mystery of her disappearance and the subsequent arrest of William Corder gripped the imagination of the whole country. McCormick's research deals with the puzzle of how Maria's stepmother came to dream of the exact place where Maria had been buried, and he discusses the previously unexplained riddle of how Maria was not only shot but also stabbed. He also introduces a new witness into the strange tale: Thomas Griffiths Wainewright, art critic, forger, and poisoner. The book is bound in the original black cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The book is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear with light soiling and rubbing along the top front edge. The rear spine edge is also rubbed and the spine ends are bumped with small nicks at the top of the spine.

Illustrated card covers, sunned to spine and edges, with light shelfwear. Original price label on the back. Binding strong and tight. Frontispiece b/w illustration. 127pp., map, b/w illustrations. Contents clean and bright. The Red Barn Murder was an 1827 murder in Polstead, Suffolk, England. A young woman, Maria Marten, was shot dead by her lover William Corder at the Red Barn, a local landmark. The two had arranged to meet before eloping to Ipswich. Corder sent letters to Marten's family claiming that she was well, but after her stepmother spoke of having dreamed that Maria had been murdered, her body was discovered in the barn the next year. Corder was located in London, where he had married. He was returned to Suffolk and found guilty of murder in a well-publicised trial. In 1828, he was hanged at Bury St Edmunds in an execution witnessed by a huge crowd. The story provoked numerous newspaper articles, songs and plays. The village where the crime had taken place became a tourist attraction and the barn was stripped by souvenir hunters. Plays, ballads and songs about the murder remained popular throughout the next century and continue to be performed today. RightWayUp Books aims to provide accurate and detailed descriptions.
