Hardcover. 390p., plus a 16-page publisher's menu of other Wheatley titles in print. and catchpennys. A well-gotten-up item, with two differing endsheet maps, many other maps in the text (line-drawn), a bravura frontispiece in color, and many b&w photos, mostly vignette portraits. Wheatley has inscribed the titlepage to one Henry Hopkinson (the British diplomat?) as "Souvenir of a grand evening in Athens," datelining March 1938. Wheatley has, by the way, a remarkably good hand and an instinct for layout. Book-design and condition: thick 8.5x5.5 inch openweave cloth boards, grey, with titling and decoration in red, spine panel slightly toned with handling, mild edgewear, corner-tips a little turned, endsheet maps unmolested, hinges sound, textblock clean, no markings besides Wheatley's. A unique copy in very good shape.

Add to basketFirst Edition. [Military History] INSCRIBED FIRST EDITION, first impression. Octavo (22 x 15cm), pp.390 [26]. With a coloured halftone frontispiece, 16 plates (30 illustrations), and 8 maps. With author's gift note in blue ink to the title page: 'For / Percy Muir / With the best of / good wishes / from / his friend // Dennis [underline]'. Publisher's grey cloth blocked in red. A near fine copy without the jacket. One of a few non-fiction works by thriller/adventure writer Dennis Wheatley. Recipient Percy Muir (1894-1979) was a book expert who introduced Ian Fleming to book collecting and assembled his important collection of scientific and pioneering books which 'made things happen'. Muir was a regular contributor to The Book Collector journal, of which Ian Fleming was the proprietor. Muir charmingly appears as British agent Muir, head of Station Z (Zurich) in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (Cape, 1963), whose signal room is hidden behind a book-lined wall. Purchased from the late great bookseller Nigel Williams (descriptions inserted), this copy is from the Ian Fleming Bibliographical Archive assembled by Jon Gilbert, with his pencilled ownership to endpaper. 'Albert Büchi', verso Formulardruck mit nummerierten Zeilen. Blatt etwas knittrig, ursprüngl. doppelt gefaltet. Alters- u. Manipulationsspuren. Schweiz. Kirchengeschichte ZSK 24/1930, pp. 161-166 (digitalis. in e-periodica).
