Signed, lined and dated in ink on the verso 'Sir John Redgauntlet & Steenie' with a contemporary transcription of a passage from Sir Walter Scott's Redgauntlet (1824). Some light age toning and minor surface wear, edges with old mounting remnants; overall in very good condition. A watercolour by John Cawse illustrating a scene from 'Wandering Willie's Tale', the inset story within Scott's Redgauntlet. The composition shows Sir John Redgauntlet seated, questioning the tenant Steenie Steenson about rent which Steenie claims to have paid to Redgauntlet's father shortly before his death. With no receipt and no record of payment, Steenie is accused of withholding the money, and under pressure replies that it lies 'in Hell' with your father and his silver whistle'. In the tale, Steenie had indeed paid the rent to the elder Redgauntlet, but fled in fear at the moment of his death and obtained no receipt. After being accused by the son, he is drawn into a supernatural episode in which he encounters the dead laird, silver whistle in hand and his company in a castle near the existing one. He is asked to play the bag pipes whilst the apparitions jig and make merry, but instead he secures proof of payment. The present scene represents the initial confrontation between Steenie and Sir John, immediately before the narrative turns to this ghostly resolution. A signed, lined and dated watercolour by a known exhibiting artist and author, in relation to Walter Scott's Redgauntlet. Cawse is perhaps best known for his book "the art of painting portraits" published shortly after this in 1840. . Signed by Author(s).

First Edition, RARE in original printer's boards. 8vo, original printer's pressed paper boards backed in brown paper, with original printed paper labels on the spines, edges untrimmed. 319; 328; 331, [4 ads] pp. Rare in the publisher's original boards with no hint of sophistication or repair whatsoever. The text untrimmed and very fresh through, near to completely free of foxing and age, the boards quite clean and well preserved, some minor cracking to the brown paper at the joints. RARE FIRST EDITION IN THE PRINTER'S BOARDS, THIS COPY IS IN FULL CONTEMPORARY STATE. It is also one of the author's less commonly seen, though perhaps less well remembered, major works. REDGAUNTLET is one of Scott's Waverley historical novels, and is set in Dumfries, Scotland in 1765. It is in many ways the most autobiographical of his novels as its two young heroes, Alan Fairford and Darsie Latimer, reflect the duality of Scott's own character. The novel describes the beginnings of a fictional third Jacobite Rebellion. While the plot is of course fictional, it was (according to an introduction by Scott written in the 1830s) inspired by a genuine visit by Bonnie Prince Charlie to London in 1750. One of the highlights of the novel is "Wandering Willie's Tale", which appears frequently as a stand-along short story in Scottish literary anthologies. Wandering Willie is a wandering musician and the narrator of the tale. It is a ghost story with the climax being an encounter between Willie's grandfather, Steenie Steenson and the ghost of his landlord Robert Redgauntlet.

A lengthy series of novels by Sir Walter Scott, The Waverley Novels were among the most popular and widely read novels in Europe for nearly a century. The later books bore the words "by the author of Waverley" on their title pages. It explains the speed with which the translation had to be prepared in order to beat rival translations to the press. It also engages with criticisms of the recent translation of St. Ronan's Well and with the popular supposition that some of the new novels emanating from Scotland were not in fact by Scott at all but by Lockhart. The publisher sets the record straight, stating precisely which were Lockhart's (Valerius, Adam Blair, Reginald Dalton) and which were Scott's. This set is from the library, though without the bookplates, assembled at Voltaire's former home, the Chateau de Cirey ( Champagne) by Mme de Simiane ( 1761-1835 ), sometime lover of Lafayette and later, a correspondent of Fanny Burney. Diane-Adelaide de Simiane's early life was colourful and she came to Cirey in 1795 after a period of incarceration during the Terror. Previously she had been married to Charles-Francois de Simiane, who had served with Lafayette in America and who died in mysterious circumstances in 1787.
