Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. A somewhat unconventional history of Spanish influence in North and South America, timed to coincide with the 500th anniversary of Columbus's 1492 voyage to the New World, and written by a Mexican novelist rather than a professional historian. From the dust jacket flaps: "Using the illuminating metaphor of mirrors, inspired by mirrors found in ancient burial caches in the Americas, Fuentes challenges us to think in new ways about how a national character is formed, how a stereotype evolves, and what continuities are discovered when a human community truly understands its roots. Illustrated with more than 160 stunning drawings, paintings, and photographs, The Buried Mirror celebrates of culture of enormous wealth and diversity, as Carlos Fuentes fulfills the poet Pablo Neruda's resounding cry, 'I am here to sing this history.'" 7¼ x 10 inches, 399 pages. Both book and dust jacket in very good condition. Half-title page contains an author's inscription that is very hard to read - something like "To my friend Lennie Masterson [?], after an enjoyable afternoon. Carlos Fuentes 1992." Author's signature nothing but a few illegible pen strokes. Inscribed by Author(s).

From the flaps of the jacket: 'Jack Warner earned a football scholarship to Yale, and after graduation he served as a Marine Corps infantry officer during the Korean War. He was a considerable force in Massachusetts and Boston politics for many, many years before, as Mike Barnicle tells it, "retreating to Nantucket where he has lived a wonderful life." Jack Warner has been a politician, a banker, a newspaper publisher, a real estate developer, in international business consultant, a lobsterman. He literally sat at the feet of an American president, he lunched in a remote Irish pub with the man known as "Hitler's general"; and he had dinner often with Olympic legend Jesse Owens. Reflections in the Rearview Mirror is a wonderfully funny and moving book full of laughter, warmth, friendship and love.'. Signed by Author(s).

Signed by the Author. keywords: Latin America Translated History Mexico. DESCRIPTION - IIn his introduction to this passionate history of Spain and the Spanish-speaking peoples of the Americas, Carlos Fuentes asks the question: What do we really have to celebrate of Columbus's historic voyage to the New World? After all, the quincentennial of the 'discovery of America' finds Latin American republics in a state of deep crisis, with inflation, unemployment, and excessive foreign debt threatening their still precarious economic and political institutions. From the mysterious cave drawings at Altamira to the explosive graffiti on the walls of East Los Angeles, images of Spain and the Americas speak to us of the great variety of Spanish culture. Carlos Fuentes knows this culture intimately. Combining a sophisticated perspective on world events and a novelist's eye for irony and metaphor, he weaves a historical narrative of dazzling color and vibrancy. Sweeping across centuries of tumultuous history, Fuentes gives new life to monarchs and conquistadors, to Indian cultures and revolutions, and finally to modern-day Spain, Latin America, and the Hispanic United States, History and its players come alive on every page, in the stories of the famous and the little-known, the heroes and tyrants, martyrs and saints, virgins and kings. Using the illuminating metaphor of mirrors, inspired by mirrors found in ancient burial caches in the Americas, Fuentes challenges us to think in new ways about how a national character is formed, how a stereotype evolves, and what continuities are discovered when a human community truly understands its roots. inventory #24808. Hardcover. Reprint. Third printing. x, 190, [8]p. Comedy veteran Leifer tells hilarious stories about herself, in her laugh-out-loud literary debut that looks at life, love, family, and the aging process From Wikipedia: "Carol Leifer (born July 27, 1956) is an American comedian, writer, producer and actor whose career as a stand-up comedian started in the 1970s when she was in college. David Letterman discovered her performing in a comedy club in the 1980s and she has since been a guest on Late Night with David Letterman over twenty-five times as well as numerous other shows and venues. She has written many television scripts including for The Larry Sanders Show, Saturday Night Live, and most notably, Seinfeld. Leifer's "inner monologue" observational style is often autobiographical encompassing subjects about her Jewish ancestry and upbringing, coming out, same-sex marriage, relationships (having been married previously to a man and now partnered with a woman) and parenting. Leifer has become vegan, saying "I recently became vegan because I felt that as a Jewish lesbian, I wasn t part of a small enough minority. So now I m a Jewish lesbian vegan.Leifer is a stand-up comedian, writer, producer and actor and has been involved in such television shows as Seinfeld, It's Like, You Know., Alright Already, and The Larry Sanders Show. With Mitchell Hurwitz, she is the creator of the short-lived The Ellen Show (2001). In 1988, she had her own special on Cinemax titled Carol Doesn't Leifer Anymore, which was produced by David Letterman. This was shortly followed by several more specials, titled Carol Leifer Comedy Cruise (1989), Really Big Show (1990), and Gaudy, Baudy, and Blue (1992). She was a writer on Saturday Night Live during the 1985/1986 season. She has performed on Late Night with David Letterman 25 times, but has only been on his show once since 1992. Leifer has also appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, Dr. Katz, Politically Incorrect, Hollywood Squares, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Her hosting duties have included four seasons of A&E's Caroline's Comedy Hour, as well as guest stints on Talk Soup and Later. She has written for the Academy Awards for most of the 21st century. Leifer starred in, created and executive-produced the WB sitcom Alright Already, called one of the "10 Best New Shows of the New Season" by the Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post. Despite good reviews, the show only ran one season. Her stand-up experience includes opening for Jerry Seinfeld and Frank Sinatra. Sinatra praised Leifer as "one funny broad! " and "I wish my mother had been that funny I wouldn't have had to work so hard." She continues working the stand-up circuit and is reportedly writing an original picture for Dreamworks. Additionally, Leifer is a writer and co-executive producer on the CBS sitcom Rules of Engagement. In September 2007, Leifer won an auction for the handwritten notes used by Michael Vick during his apology for his role in dogfighting. [9] Leifer began filming as a contestant for the 3rd season of Celebrity Apprentice in October 2009. However, she was the first to be eliminated on the premiere episode which aired on March 14, 2010.Leifer is currently in a committed relationship with Lori Wolf, who works in commercial real estate. [13][14] They share a $3.2-million, 5, 000-square-foot (460 m2) home in the Santa Monica Hills. [14] They have one adopted son, named Bruno, who was born in 2007. [15] Lefier has also written for several academy awards shows, including the recent 84th annual Academy Awards. Her first book of humorous essays, entitled When You Lie About Your Age, The Terrorists Win was released on March 10, 2009. In it, she discusses the moment she discovered she might be gay and how her life has changed for the better. Good. No dust jacket. Signed by author. Red mark on bottom edge. Signed on title page.
