Paperback. Condition: Good. Long ago in Norway, three sisters were talking about marriage. The two eldest wanted titles and money. Peggy Ann, the youngest, only wanted a kind husband who loved her. I'd even be content with the Black Bull of Norroway, she said. And so begins a classic fairy tale of enchantment, adventure, bravery, loyalty, and love. Charlotte Huck's spunky heroine and Anita Lobel's lush paintings combine to create an experience to be savored over many readings.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. This volume of essays explores the long-unstudied relationship between religion and human security throughout the world. The 1950s marked the beginning of a period of extraordinary religious revival, during which religious political-parties and non-governmental organizations gained power around the globe. Until now, there has been little systematic study of the impact that this phenomenon has had on human welfare, except of a relationship between religious revival to violence. The authors of these essays show that religion can have positive as well as negative effects on human wellbeing. They address a number of crucial questions about the relationship between religion and human security: Under what circumstances do religiously motivated actors tend to advance human welfare, and under what circumstances do they tend to threaten it? Are members of some religious groups more likely to engage in welfare-enhancing behavior than in others? Do certain state policies tend to promote security-enhancing behavior among religious groups while other policies tend to promote security-threatening ones? In cases where religious actors are harming the welfare of a population, what responses could eliminate that threat without replacing it with another?Religion and Human Security shows that many states tend to underestimate the power of religious organizations as purveyors of human security. Governments overlook both the importance of human security to their populations and the religious groups who could act as allies in securing the welfare of their people. This volume offers a rich variety of theoretical perspectives on the nuanced relationship between religion and human security. Through case studies ranging from Turkey, Egypt, and Pakistan, to the United States, Northern Ireland, and Zimbabwe, it provides important suggestions to policy makers of how to begin factoring the influence of religion into their evaluation of a population's human security and into programs designed to improve human security around the globe.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Evil is as problematic today as it was for the founders of the world's religions or the philosophers of the ancient world. In Evil and the Response of World Religions, William Cenkner has gathered 19 essays--from authorities such as Peter C. Phan, Wande Abimbola, Riffat Hassan, Paul Badham, Chandra Wikramagamage, and Mary Ann Stenger--which reflect not only the wisdom of the West, Asia, and Africa, but also contemporary insights from feminist, liberationist, and ecological perspectives. All writers face a similar enigma as human potential increases along with the possibility of human depravity. Religions, both East and West, have responded to the problem of evil through their shamans, prophets, and wisdom figures with understanding and profound consideration. Each tradition, either collectively or through individual thinkers, has something distinct and important to say. The purpose this book is to identify causes and possible solutions to particular manifestations of evil--such as war, racism, consumerism, and family fragmentation.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Love over Religion>is a brave and heartfelt reply to the question, Why did you leave Christianity? After years as an active churchgoer, Danica Allen made the difficult choice to leave the faith. No single moment led to her decision. Instead, she found herself gradually realizing that her personal beliefs and morality were at odds with Christianity's foundation. Beginning with her discomfort with a God who actively encourages acts of abuse, slavery, and discrimination, Allen tackles Christianity's most significant sociopolitical issues and negative attitudes toward other faiths and the marginalized. She does so not with anger or intellectual pontification, but with gentleness, humor, and compassion. A must-read for all those struggling to explain why they cannot accept Christianity, Love over Religion also invites Christians to examine the often-contradictory teachings of the church. Allen does not condemn the followers of any faith. Instead, she offers a chance to bridge the divide between atheists and Christians. Love over Religion provides food for a civil conversation on the relative merits of faith and nonbelief. Are you ready for that discussion.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Could Christianity exist without religious rites or legal rights? In Dying to Religion and Empire, Jeremy Myers not only answers this question with an emphatic Yes but argues that if the church is going to thrive in the coming decades, we must give up our religious rites and legal rights. Regarding religious rites, Jeremy Myers calls up on the church to abandon the quasi-magical traditions of water baptism and the Lord's Supper and transform or redeem these practices so that they reflect the symbolic meaning and intent which they had in New Testament times. Furthermore, the church has become far too dependent upon certain legal rights for our continued existence. Ideas such as the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are not conducive to living as the people of God who are called to follow Jesus into servanthood and death. Also, reliance upon the freedom of speech, the freedom of assembly, and other such freedoms as established by the Bill of Rights have made the church a servant of the state rather than a servant of God and the gospel. Such freedoms must be forsaken if we are going to live within the rule and reign of God on earth. This book not only challenges religious and political liberals but conservatives as well. It is a call to leave behind the comfortable religion we know, and follow Jesus into the uncertain and wild ways of radical discipleship. To rise and live in the reality of God's Kingdom, we must first die to religion and empire.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. What would you like to ask someone who has died and gone to the other side? This book is your chance to investigate the afterlife and the nature of religion through real experiences of God beyond death. In The Light Behind God, philosopher of religion Rene Jorgensen reveals his research of 16 people who have had a Near Death Experience. Since life after death is the foundation of religion, Jorgensen explores the parallels between religion and people who die and come back, and in his study he asks what we can learn about religion from these real experiences of the realm of God. Based on Jorgensen's findings and supported by over 30 years of research, The Light Behind God is not based on belief or dogma but on a sincere attempt to interpret these direct experiences of God in an objective manner. Through this book you will gain insights about life after death and through its use of testimonies from the other side you will get a glimpse of a true and living God.…

'H' stands for:- Happiness- Help- Hope- Health - and, most importantly, Humour. …

Paperback. Condition: Good. After preparing to lead a quiet life as a teacher and scholar of political theory, William Galston has spent the past quarter century crossing the boundaries between academia and public life, including a two-year stint as Deputy Assistant for Domestic Policy under President Clinton. Reflecting these boundary-crossings, Public Matters contains a selection of Galston's essays on politics, policy, and religion. Each is viewed through the prisms of history, theory, and ethical concerns. The essays on politics tell the story of Galston's efforts to help redirect the Democratic Party so that it speaks more clearly to the concerns of 21st century Americans. The essays in the policy section reflect the range of issues with which Galston has grappled as a political activist and public official. Finally, the essays on religion try to come to grips with the challenges that religion, taken seriously (as it should be) poses for the governance of constitutional democracies.…
