In 8? (cm 16,5 x 20,6), cartonatura muta coeva, pp 119, esemplare in buone condizioni. La Confessio Helvetica prior (1536), denominata anche seconda Confessione basilese, costitu? la prima confessione di fede comune delle regioni riformate di lingua tedesca appartenenti alla Confederazione. Essa fu redatta in vista degli sforzi per un'unione con i luterani e della convocazione del Concilio generale a Mantova. Gi? dopo la conclusione del Concilio di Trento nel 1563, si sent? la necessit? di una nuova confessione di fede. Le cause immediate per la stesura della "Confessio Helvetica posterior" furono fornite dal principe elettore del Palatinato Federico III. Convertendosi alla fede riformata e al catechismo di Heidelberg (1563), egli si era messo infatti in una posizione difficile, rischiando di essere destituito e messo al bando dalla Dieta imperiale indetta da Massimiliano II per il gennaio del 1566. Per questo motivo, Federico alla fine del 1565 si rivolse a Teodoro di Beza e a Heinrich Bullinger, chiedendo loro di elaborare urgentemente una confessione di fede da sottoporre alla Dieta imperiale che evidenziasse la concordia tra riformati e protestanti sia all'interno sia al di fuori dell'Impero. Bullinger invi? a Heidelberg un testo del 1561, che aveva compilato per suo uso ("Expositio brevis.fidei"), e che tre anni dopo venne consegnato al Consiglio zurighese come parte del suo testamento spirituale. Il documento ricevette consensi unanimi; entusiasta, il principe elettore volle subito farlo stampare a nome delle Chiese riformat della Confederazione Le trattative tra i cantoni confederati riformati procedettero speditamente; Berna sollev? diverse obiezioni, di cui si tenne conto apportando leggere modifiche. A parte Basilea, in quegli anni sotto influenza luterana, tutte le Chiese rif. sviz. aderirono a questa confessione di fede, comprese quelle di Coira, Bienne, Mulhouse e Ginevra. Gi? all'inizio del marzo del 1566 il testo lat. dal titolo "Confessio et expositio simplex orthodoxae fidei et dogmatum Catholicorum syncerae religionis Christianae" risult? disponibile in forma stampata, e pot? essere inviato al principe elettore insieme alla sua traduzione ted., curata da Heinrich Bullinger. Con i suoi 30 articoli, la "Confessio Helvetica posterior" ? la pi? ampia delle confessioni di fede riformata. Da un punto di vista teologico risultano rilevanti soprattutto la riflessione ermeneutica sulla Sacra Scrittura, la dottrina cristocentrica della predestinazione e dell'elezione divina, l'approccio cauto alle questioni controverse, a cui venne anteposta la messa in evidenza dei principi comuni. Insieme al catechismo di Heidelberg, la seconda Confessione elvetica divenne elemento di unione tra le Chiese svizzere riformate e simbolo universalmente riconosciuto del protestantesimo riformato. Anche se non risulta pi? vincolante per parecchie Chiese riformate, ancora oggi questo testo risulta significativo per il suo valore storico e teologico di vasta esposizione della fede riformata.
