Not dated; circa 1860s. Edition and printing not known. In good dark red cloth boards, with blind stamped decorated edges and corners to front and rear and gilt…swan to front, gilt giraffe to spine with gilt titles. The boards are very tight, quite even; a little marked around the edges. "The Clevedon Community Co-operative Bookshop Bindery Team" have repaired the front hinge and cloth patches added to head and tail of spine and water marks inked and painted to match. The yellow end papers are a little marked; blue book plate on front paste down. The text block has most attractive and detailed black and white illustrations and has gilt cut edges. The pages are firm and fairly even, with foxing on most pages. The plate opposite page 198 has been reinforced and re-attached by the Bindery Team. Good minus condition. No dedications etc. Without jacket.

But this is the first edition that covers the Gloucester sea serpent, [vol.2, page 299] a legendary creature reportedly seen around…and off the coast of Gloucester, Massachusetts and Cape Ann area in the United States. The heyday of sightings began in August 1817 and continued into 1818-1819 . This set belonged to Robert Montgomery who bought it May 16" 1819, for $3.
