Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In the fifth book of the Port Williams Membership, Andy Catlett grapples with the loss of his hand and confronts the clash between industrial agriculture and traditional farming, ultimately finding redemption through memory and reconnection to the land and community of his Kentucky homeAfter losing his hand in an accident, Andy Catlett confronts an agronomist whose surreal vision can see only industrial farming. This vision is powerfully contrasted with that of modest Amish farmers content to live outside the pressures brought by capitalist postindustrial progress, and by working the land to keep away the three great evils of boredom, vice, and need.As Andy's perspective filters through his anger over his loss and the harsh city of San Francisco surrounding him, he begins to remember: the people and places that wait 2,000 miles away in his Kentucky home, the comfort he knew as a farmer, and his symbiotic relationship to the soil. Andy laments the modern shift away from the love of the land, even as he begins to accept his own changed relationship to the world. Wendell Berry's continued fascination with the power of memory continues in this treasured novel set in 1976." Berry's poems, novels and essays . . . are probably the most sustained contemporary articulation of America's agrarian, Jeffersonian ideal." -Publishers Weekly"Wendell Berry is one of those rare individuals who speaks to us always of responsibility, of the individual cultivation of an active and aware participation in the arts of life." -The Bloomsbury Review Remembering takes place in a single day in 1976. Andy Catlett, at the bottom of a deep dark depression since losing his hand in a farming accident, is alone in San Francisco, and takes a long walt through the walking street ofthe city. By the end ofthe day, when he has flown home to Port William, Kentucky, Andy is on his way to becoming whole again. Paper Back. Condition: New. The book is aptly titled, calling deeply on memory, on longing for memory of a place close to the ground. Wendell Berry, renowned agrarian author and essayist, once again reminds the reader of kinship, of soil and dust and hard earned character. His language is poetic but far from romantic, one moment biting like Flannery O'Conner, the next poignant like Annie Dillard. The members of his cast are certainly human, but more, they are iconographic, they are a warning and a response to previous warnings 'Spare us, O Lord, the logical consequences of our folly.' Our protagonist, Andy Catlett, (formerly written of in Berry's well loved series surrounding Port William) and here found alone in San Francisco as an agricultural journalist invited to an academic conference, is often found 'remembering' on behalf of others. Berry does much the same for his readers, remembering where our own recollections have failed, recalling on our behalf the generations before us, and the people around us, who have their feet well embedded in soil and neighbor and unflinching quality. Remembering is 'not an argument about right and wrong ways of farming,' it is 'the history of souls,' and an aching representation of the present in which we all live and hope and fail, and hope again. This is a story of work and of rest for both body and intellect, it is the long furrow of responsibility tilled and planted with poetry and mettle. 103 pp.…

A novel by the Kentucky poet farmer in his ongoing Port Williams Fellowship. It is 1976 and Andy Catlett, farmer and agricultural journalist, is walking the streets of San Francisco at dawn.
