Ma première tâche a donc été de découvrir des lettres et des écrits de Renoir afin de faire la \ distinction entre la légende de l'artiste et la réalité de l'homme. Depuis 1961, j'ai identifié neuf cent soixante dix-sept lettres, textes publiés et déclarations de Renoir provenant de quatre vingt-huit sources différentes : quatre cent quarante-sept lettres publiées dans trente-huit livres et journaux, deux cent treize lettres inédites conservées dans trente bibliothèques, musées et collections privées, et trois cent dix-sept fragments figurant dans vingt catalogues de marchands d'autographes et de ventes publiques.
