Softcover. Condition: vg-. First edition. Duodecimo. 48pp. Original tan-beige staple-bound wrappers, with black lettering on the covers. The work discusses the establishment of some of the oldest Jewish neighborhoods outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, during the so called "Old Yishuv" of the Ottoman period in Palestine. In 1869 Jerusalem Rabbi and prominent community leader Yosef Rivlin (1836-1896) built a home in what is now the neighborhood of Nahalat Shiv'a, and in doing so, founded what is considered the second oldest Jewish neighborhood outside the walls of the city. Regarded as among the key pioneering figures in the establishment of these new neighborhoods, Rivlin had been active in these endeavors from as early as 1857, when he co-founded the company Bonei Yerushalayim (Builders of Jerusalem). Later he played an important role in the securing the 1862 annulment of the Ottoman Sultan's decree banning new Jewish construction outside the walls of the city. Surprisingly the notion of Jewish residents living outside of the city walls was so radical and strange a concept to the Jerusalem Jewish community of the time, that Rivlin's family was said to have believed that he was possessed by a dybbuk (a malicious undead spirit), as an explanation for his activities and beliefs. Rivlin would go on to found a total of 13 of these earliest neighborhoods including Mea Shearim, Even Yisrael, Beit Ya'akov, Mishkenot Yisrael, Mazkeret Moshe, Ohel Moshe, Knesset Yisrael, Zikhron Tuvya, Shevet Ahim, Shaarei Zedek, Ezrat Yisrael, and Yemin Moshe. This work was published to commemorate the seventieth anniversary of that initial 1869 event, and its author was a close relative of Rabbi Rivlin, Hebrew scholar, professor and orientalist Yosef Yoel Rivlin (1889-1971). Professor Rivlin was the father of Reuven Rivlin (b. 1939) who served as the tenth president of Israel. Included on p.28 is a b/w captioned photographic reproduction of an image showing a contemporary 1939 view of the first home that Rivlin built. Text throughout in Hebrew. Wrappers with some minor shipping to extremities. Spine lightly chipped, including the head and tail. Inscription to a previous owner in pen on the front cover. Back cover with a few markings in pen. Title page with light damp staining and the ink stamp of a previous owner. The rest of the pages are quite clean with only the most minor sporadic damp stains, as well as age toning to the pages.
