[slight wear to book at spine ends, small company name rubber-stamped at lower corner of half-title page; the jacket shows only mild edgewear, and has a couple of tiny nicks along the top edge]. Crime novel about "a woman of great wealth who returns from a concentration camp, following World War II, to her young husband and to the daughter she has had by a previous liaison [both of whom] have believed she is dead. They are determined to acquire her fortune." Originally published in France in 1961 (as "Le retour des cendres"), the book was adapted for the 1965 British film of the same name, directed by J. Lee Thompson and starring Ingrid Thulin and Maximilian Schell, and again (with considerable alteration of the plot) for the 2014 German film PHOENIX. (The company name rubber-stamped at the front of the book is the Mirisch Company, one of the firms involved in the production of the 1965 film.).
