Large, lovely pictures and fascinating text. An exhibition of 35 limestone statues, selected to represent the unique archaeological treasure unearthed in China's Shandong Province in 1996. They reveal the outstanding development of stone carving in China between the 6th and 11th centuries. In 1996 an extraordinary discovery of Buddhist stone sculptures was found in a pit in eastern China. The high quality of the sculptures, their large number and their deliberate burial raise many questions. Why should over 400 Buddhist figures, dating in the main to the sixth century, have been buried at some point in the twelfth century in a carefully constructed pit within the precincts of a temple situated in the eastern province of Shandong? A selection of the finest sculptures were brought to the United States for exhibit, after appearing in Berlin, Zurich, and London. We pack our books properly and ship daily from the UK.
