The result of a lifetime of research and firsthand experience, the book combines narrative history of the highest order and intimate familiarity with the people, events, and social currents that animated Hitler's regime. A well~to~do social climber who made and married money, von Ribbentrop was among the few in Hitler's circle with a claim to social prominence. As ambassador to England, von Ribbentrop quickly worked his way up to head the Foreign Ministry, along the way negotiating the British Naval Agreement, the Anti~Comintern Pact, and the Soviet Non~Aggression Pact. Frustrated during the war, when diplomacy was rendered virtually obsolete, von Ribbentrop never forsook his Fuhrer even at Nurnberg, where he was tried and hanged as a senior war criminal. With a provocative foreword by Tom Wolfe that draws disturbing comparisons between the Berlin of the 1930s and American society of the 1980s, Hitler's Diplomat is not only the riveting story of one of Hitler's closest collaborators, it also provides a window onto a side of Nazi Germany that is as fascinating as it is troubling: the men and women of culture and means who gave themselves to Hitler and his war machine. Born into Berlin's privileged classes, John Weitz was educated in England. He and his family fled from the Nazis in 1938. Weitz worked for the OSS in the European theater and is the author of the best~selling novel Value of Nothing as well as Man in Charge and Friends in High Places. He sits on the board of the Leo Baeck Institute and has been decorated with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Universally regarded by his peers as foolish, incompetent, and arrogant, Ribbentrop advanced in only a few short years to the position of Hitler's Foreign Minister. A successful middle~class merchant of mediocre intellect, Ribbentrop owed his position largely to the fact that he was deeply in thrall to two people~an ambitious, dominating wife and the demonic Fuhrer, who saw in him a spineless creature he might bend totally to his will. In 1936 Hitler appointed Ribbentrop, then only in his early forties, Ambassador to London. Having become a laughingstock in England, Ribbentrop returned home eighteen months later determined to plot a war against England. After less than two years, Ribbentrop forged the notorious nonaggression pact with the Soviet Union, clearing the way for Hitler to attack Poland and launch World War II. Ribbentrop spent the war years trying to solidify the Axis alliance. Although he was the only Nazi to have moved in Jewish circles before the Third Reich, he became deeply implicated in the "final solution." In the wake of German defeat, Ribbentrop was convicted as a war criminal and hanged at Nuremberg. In a narrative as gripping as it is scholarly, Michael Bloch vividly portrays this tragicomic and historically neglected figure.
