Octavo softcover (VG+); all our specials have minimal description to keep listing them viable. They are at least reading copies, complete and in reasonable condition, but usually secondhand; frequently they are superior examples. Ordering more than one book will reduce your overall postage cost.

Octavo; hardcover; red boards with gilt spine-titling; 320pp., with monochrome maps and 8pp. of monochrome photographic plates. Toned and spotted text block edges and pages lightly toned. Very good to near fine in like dustwrapper. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. Richard the Lionheart is a confused character, often painted as a heroic figure due to the requirements of having someone to stand in opposition to his brother "Bad" King John. However, Richard I's character is not so cut-and-dried, stemming mainly from the fact that he was no Englishman, spending most of his life in Western France rather than in England. In this book John Gillingham asks us to stop thinking of Richard as a dedicated English monarch and to consider him as he truly was - a French king with holdings in a distant country. In this fashion, the true nature of Richard the Lionheart becomes clear.
