This science fiction novel details a war between two fictional republics of England. The anti-military sentiment of the work shows the author's pacifism. Charles Edward Montague (1867-1928) wrote novels, essays and articles with a particular emphasis on his opposition to war. In the belief that he would be aiding a swift resolution to the First World War, Montague fought despite being too old to enlist, and later became an armed escort for important people visiting the battlefield, amongst them H.
