Aside from his sonnets, the renowned style of which beas his name, Petrarch translated Latin Manuscripts and wrote essays and letters to his friends, including Boccaccio. The Rima Scelte were inspired by a woman he saw in a church, Laura de Noves, who was his must for the majority of his works. The collection includes 56 sonnets, leven canzoni, two sistine and a hymn to the Virgin. It was first published in 1501 by Aldo Manuzio. This editor of this edition, Thomas James Mathias (1752-1835) was an Italian scholar and translator who was at one time librarian at Buckingham Palace. He was best know for his satiric work on contemporary writers, Pursuits of Literature (1794) and for editing the works of Thomas Gray.
