Ihre Antwort darauf lautete:'Bei den meisten Arbeiten suche ich nach spezifischen Eigenschaften von Individuen in Gruppenzusammenhängen. Mich hat immer das Paradox zwischen Identität und Uniformität interessiert. Indem ich mich auf Posen, Haltungen, Gesten und Blicke konzentriere, versuche ich Bilder zu finden. Ich bin immer auf der Suche nach Menschen, die authentisch sind, ich möchte erkennen, wie sie sich von den anderen unterscheiden. Außerdem ist es mir wichtig, dass ich eine Beziehung zu ihnen aufbauen kann. Am Ende geht es dabei immer um Erkenntnis.'Ihre Herangehensweise und Umsetzung zeigen dabei deutlich eine strukturierte Konsequenz und Art und Weise der Klassifikation, die in einigen Punkten an August Sander erinnern lassen, einen Fotografen, den sie selbst als eine ihrer Inspirationsquelle im Bereich Fotografie, neben Diane Arbus, nennt.August Sander, der in hunderten Portraits Menschen unterschiedlicher Schichten und Berufsgruppen zeigte, versuchte ein umfassendes Gesellschaftsportrait seiner Zeit darzustellen. Vergleichbar mit einem Katalog, realisierte er eine Art soziologische Bestandsaufnahme der unterschiedlichen Klassen und Stände. Seine Arbeitsweise war dabei formal, direkt und technisch präzise, da er überzeugt war, so die universale Erkenntnis über die Menschen aufzeigen zu können. Fernerhin beschäftigte ihn die Frage der gegenseitigen Beeinflussung von Mensch, Gemeinschaft und Umfeld. Mittels einer konventionellen Form der Portraitfotografie, bei der so gut wie nichts dem Zufall überlassen wurde, registrierte er die deutsche Bevölkerung in ihren gesellschaftlichen Rollen, Positionen und Identitäten zwischen zwei Weltkriegen. (siehe Abb. 1)Im Gegensatz zu Sander geht es Rineke Dijkstra, wie schon in dem vorangegangen Zitat deutlich gemacht, vordergründig um den Augenblick und um das Suchen einer Erkenntnis, die sich hinter ihm verbirgt.Das mittlerweile sehr umfangreiche Werk der Künstlerin macht deutlich, daß sie immer wieder auf Jugendliche zurückgreift oder ähnlich einer Studie Menschen begleitet und zeigt, die geprägt sind durch soziale, politische und persönliche Erlebnisse und Situationen. Es sind Stadien der Umbrüche, in denen sie versucht den für sie authentischen Moment im Davor, Dazwischen und Danach zu sehen, einzufangen und festzuhalten.…

Overall attractive copy of this out of print monograph of vibrant portraits by Rineke Dijkstra. 160 pages, most of which are said portraits, richly printed. Binding is solid, tight, sturdy, square. Interior is bright and clean with some very slight tanning at the page edges, in the margins only and not at all effecting the images. The front free endpaper has a rectangular area where a sticker was removed and scarred the paper underneath, and this is the only damage. Dustjacket is sharp with some rubbing and a small scuffed area about the top edge of the back panel by the spine head. Boards clean and firm, DJ now in brodart.…
