Reprint of Hastings's article (originally printed in "Physical Culture" in 1910) on Roadtown, Edgar Chambless's utopian concept of a city laid out along rail lines, with a farm plot adjacent to each dwelling, and direct access to underground transit. The dirt and distraction of above-ground roads would become a thing of the past, as would the exploitation and corruption of companies involved in transportation-related industries. Housework and cooking would be reorganized along cooperative lines, and factory work would be decentralized into cottage industries whose products could be transported, again, through the rail lines directly underground.

Emerging from the tumultuous aftermath of the 1893 financial panic, this book presents a visionary solution to the ills of urban life and the inefficiencies of modern civilization. The author, inspired by personal hardship and a deep understanding of technological advancements, proposes "Roadtown" ââ â a radical reimagining of city planning that seamlessly integrates transportation, housing, and essential utilities. This groundbreaking concept challenges the traditional notions of urban development, drawing inspiration from nature's efficient coordination of movement and consumption. The author critiques the haphazard growth of cities, highlighting the resulting congestion, pollution, and social inequalities. "Roadtown" offers an alternative: a linear city stretching across the countryside, where homes are connected by a high-speed, noiseless monorail system and residents enjoy the benefits of both urban convenience and rural tranquility. Exploring themes of efficiency, community, and technological progress, the book delves into the intricate details of "Roadtown's" infrastructure, from its innovative construction materials to its ingenious use of pipes and wires for essential services. The author envisions a society where drudgery is minimized, cooperation thrives, and individuals have the freedom to pursue meaningful work and leisure. Ultimately, this book presents a compelling vision of a future where technology and human ingenuity converge to create a more equitable, sustainable, and fulfilling way of life. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Roadtown is a visionary proposal for a radically new form of urban life-one continuous, linear city extending across the landscape. Designed to merge transportation, housing, industry, and agriculture into a unified system, the plan outlines a world without traditional cities, traffic congestion, or slums. Chambless imagines a future where people live in concrete structures along a single railway line, with homes connected by underground electric trains, rooftop promenades, and modern utilities integrated directly into the infrastructure.
