Published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1913, here is the first hardback printing of Captain Theodore Tharp's ROB ROY: THE STORY OF A STAG inscribed by the author to a previous owner in black ink to the front free end paper. 164 pages, super silhouette illustrated plates throughout, green cloth binding, white lettering, black decoration, the book is in good condition with the boards a little bowed and some general fading to the cloth at the spine. Internally, baring a trim at the top of the front free end paper above the signed inscription. There is also some browning to the extreme outsides of the pages and to the first and last few pages. Burrows' record of the proceedings before the court in the case of the American citizen Silas Enoch Burrows [1794-1870] vs British Ship, Australia, Formerly American Ship Rob Roy in which Burrows lost his rights to his ship, the Rob Roy, while it was at dock in Hong Kong, then a colony and dependent territory of the UK, when "the surveyor, the agent of the owner [condemned] and then purchased the ship." Charles Johnson McCurdy [1797-1891], the 40th Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut was, at the time of publication, a Judge of the Connecticut Superior Court. 8vo blind-stamped brown cloth lettered in gilt on front "BRITISH ADMIRALTY PROCEEDINGS AMERICAN SHIP ROB ROY"; 87 pages plus index. First edition, a specially bound presentation copy, inscribed on the title page: "Mr A. Thibaudeau, from the author". This edition includes Senior's July 1821 review of the state of British agriculture - his first published analysis of any economic question, and a relatively orthodox discussion of free-trade doctrine. Senior's dedicatee is probably Adolphe Narcisse Thibaudeau (1795-1856), the editor of the radical Paris newspaper Le National who spent time in England after 1832 and corresponded with John Stuart Mill, a contemporary of Senior at the Political Economy Club. In an 1834 commissioner's report, Senior thanks "M. Thibaudeau" for providing information on foreign labourers and poor relief. This edition collects seven offprint articles from 1821 to 1835, with a new title page and with the material not by Senior obscured by overslips. Senior's literary criticism of the Waverley novels remains frequently cited in studies of Scott's work. The reviews in this collection cover several of Scott's lesser-known works, including The Fortunes of Nigel (1822) and Peveril of the Peak (1823). Karl Marx judged Senior the "bel-esprit of English economists, well-known, alike for his economical 'science' and for his beautiful style" (Capital, vol. I, sect. III).
