Born on January 14, 1876, in New Brighton, Cheshire, England, Loraine initially pursued a career in the military. He served in the British Army and later became interested in aviation. Loraine gained fame not only for his acting skills but also for his achievements in aviation. He became the first person to make a live parachute jump from an airplane in 1913. This daring feat added to his reputation as an adventurous and multi-talented individual. In the realm of acting, Robert Loraine had a successful career on both sides of the Atlantic. He appeared in numerous stage productions, including several Shakespearean plays. His notable roles include performances in "Cyrano de Bergerac" and "If I Were King." Loraine was known for his strong stage presence and his ability to capture the audience's attention. When World War I broke out, Loraine once again took on a military role and served as a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps. After the war, he continued his acting career and also became involved in aviation ventures. Unfortunately, Robert Loraine's life was cut short in a tragic plane crash. On December 23, 1935, his aircraft crashed in the English Channel, resulting in his death at the age of 59. Despite the tragic end to his life, Loraine is remembered for his pioneering contributions to aviation and his successful career as a stage actor. ; 19.2 x 13.3 x 3.1 cms; xxviii, 274, (2) pages Original gilt decorated blindstamped cloth.

Autograph Letter Signed to actor and RFC Captain, Robert Loraine (1876-1935). Royal Flying Corps, Larkhill, Salisbury Plain, 9 August [1914]. Two leaves (four sides), each on Royal Flying Corps headed paper, 170 × 230 mm, written in ink, dated 'Aug 9th'. Original folds, light toning, but clean and legible throughout; paper sound. Overall, very good. The letter is addressed to Robert Loraine and concerns practical arrangements during the opening days of the war: the despatch of a motor car to London, payment of repair and mess bills, a broken clutch, laundry and luggage, and cab fares between Waterloo and Montague Square. Though domestic in subject, the context is early RFC service life, written from Larkhill, one of the principal training and mobilisation centres of British military aviation in August 1914. The correspondent, Wing Commander Robert Brooke-Popham, would become one of the senior air officers, rising to Air Chief Marshal and serving as Commander-in-Chief Far East at the outbreak of the Pacific War. The recipient, Captain Robert Loraine (1876-1935), was a well-known actor who was also one of the earliest Royal Flying Corps pilots, joining in 1913 and serving from the beginning of the First World War. Signed by Author(s).

Robert Bilcliffe Loraine MC DSO (14 January 1876 - 23 December 1935) was a successful London and Broadway British stage actor, actor-manager and soldier who later enjoyed a side career as a pioneer aviator. Robert made his first stage appearance in the English provinces in 1889. In 1909 Loraine took up aviation learning first to fly at the Bleriot school at Pau, France. He then switched to the easier to fly Farman biplane, on which he achieved great fame. In September 1910 he made what is credited as being the first aeroplane flight from England to Ireland. He piloted a Bristol Boxkites in the British Army manouevres on Salisbury Plain, during which he sent the first radio signals to be sent from an aeroplane in Britain. Loraine served as a volunteer in the Boer War between 1899 and 1901. During the First World War he flew with the Royal Flying Corps. Formerly a lieutenant in the Special Reserve serving as a flying officer RFC, he was appointed to be a flight commander with the rank of captain on 15 September 1915. He was awarded the MC for his "conspicuous gallantry and skill" in shooting down an Albatross biplane on 26 October 1915. On 24 April 1916 he was promoted to command a squadron, with the rank of major, and on 13 February 1917 he was appointed a wing commander, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel; he was awarded the DSO the same year. He commanded 40 Squadron. On 11 December 1918 he relinquished his commission in the Royal Air Force due to ill-health brought on by his wounds, and was granted the honorary rank of major.
