Bird on a wire : the life and art of Bill Taplin / location photography Andrew Montgomery ; art photography Robert Cotton. First edition, flat-signed by the artist to title page. Marlow: Studio Fine Art Publications, 2007. Hardback, near fine, in unclipped dustjacket. Grey boards with gilt lettering to front. Binding strong and tight. Endpapers illustrated with coastal photograph. Frontispiece lioncut by James Dodds. B/w photograph of artist. 224pp., 250 colour and b/w illustrations. Contents clean and bright. Taplin's bird sculptures embody our longed for harmony with the natural world, his obsession with birds extends beyond their beauty to their endurance, intuition and symbolic loyalty. Mostly shorebirds of various species, each bird is composed to capture their specific habits and character. His simplified, stylised forms seem to breathe each bird's very essence. Sculpted from found driftwood, which he forages from coasts and estuaries around the world, Taplin's birds are therefore enriched by previous lives. Weathered by time and the elements, each piece of wood bears marks that enhance his design, suggesting the outline of a wing or layers of plumage . Signed in the plate.Robert Montgomery (born Henry Montgomery Jr.; May 21, 1904 - September 27, 1981) was an American film and television actor, director, and producer. He began his acting career on the stage, but was soon hired by MGM. Initially assigned roles in comedies, he soon proved he was able to handle dramatic ones as well. He appeared in a wide variety of roles, such as a weak-willed prisoner in The Big House (1930), an Irish handyman in Night Must Fall (1937) and a boxer mistakenly sent to Heaven in Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941). The last two earned him nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actor. During World War II, he drove ambulances in France until the Dunkirk evacuation. When the United States entered the war on December 8, 1941, he enlisted in the Navy, and was present at the invasion at Normandy. After the war, he returned to Hollywood, where he worked in both films and, later, in television. He was also the father of actress Elizabeth Montgomery.

American businessman Robert Henry Winborne Welch, Jr. (1902-1977), made a fortune in the candy business, which he used in great part to sponsor his conservative political activism and anti-communist causes. In 1958, Welch, along with 10 other men, including American Army Colonel and former aide-de-camp to General Douglas MacArthur, Laurence Eliot Bunker, founded the influential John Birch Society. The organization rose in prominence, peaking in the 1970s and became known for Welch's anti-communist conspiracy theories, including his controversial allegation that Dwight D. Eisenhower was a communist agent. An important association copy. Blue cloth. Fine in a very good dust jacket.
