Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Good. This is an original official envelope sent and signed by Field Marshal Roberts to Lt-Gen. Sir Leslie Rundle, c1902. The envelope measures 9.5 x22.5cm, and is folded vertically and is laid on a piece of card that measures 11.5 × 15.5cm. The envelope has a typed address "Lieut. General Sir Leslie Rundle, K.C.B., C.M.G, D.S.O. Commanding Harrismith, O.R.C. [Orange River Colony]." and has been signed by Field Marshal Roberts lower left as 'Roberts, FM'. A handwritten annotation to the front reads "Copy of Lord Roberts' letter to me on his leaving S Africa for England, R [initialled by Rundle]". A further pencil note states this was sent by railway to the staff office. Field Marshal Roberts was a British soldier born in India, he served during the Indian Mutiny, winning the Victoria Cross at Khudagani in 1858. He also served with the Abyssinian Expeditions (1868, 1871-72), the Afghan War of 1878-79, and lead the relief of Kandahar. He assumed the chief command during Second Boer War, relived Kimberley and the advance to Pretoria. He died in France in 1914 whilst visiting the troops in the Great War. Leslie Rundle was a British soldier who served in the Second Boer War and the Great War. He was appointed to the command of the 8th Division of the South African Field Force at about the time of this letter. Condition: An interesting item in good but worn condition, as one would expect an envelope to be (Note, the letter is no longer inside). The top right corner has been snipped off and as mentioned, it has been folded once and stuck down on the left hand side. Roberts' signature is clear, as are Rundle's initials. Signed by Author(s).

Autograph letter Snowden, Simla, India (the summer residence of Roberts) signed by Roberts, 21 October 1888, to Keir, concerning plated tumblers received and saying what he need is '10 tumblers, 10 wine glasses, 10 finger bowls, 4 peg tumblers to put one inside the other?', Include information about the tumblers. Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, 1832-1914, was a British Victorian era general who became one of the most successful British military commanders of his time. Born in India to an Anglo-Irish family, Roberts joined the East India Company Army and served as a young officer in the Indian Rebellion during which he was awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry. He was then transferred to the British Army and fought in the Expedition to Abyssinia and the Second Anglo-Afghan War, in which his exploits earned him widespread fame. Roberts would go on to serve as the Commander-in-Chief, India before leading British Forces for a year during the Second Boer War. He also became the last Commander-in-Chief of the Forces before the post was abolished in 1904. A man of small stature, Roberts was affectionately known to his troops and the wider British public as "Bobs" and revered as one of Britain's leading military figures at a time when the British Empire reached the height of its power. He became a symbol for the British Army and in later life became an influential proponent of stronger defence in response to the increasing threat that the German Empire posed to Britain in the lead up to the First World War. Provenance: From the family of autograph collector Emily Mary Rose Lee (1869-1949), wife of Colonel William Crawford Walton (1864-1937). Emily was the daughter of William Lee, Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the University of Glasgow from 1874 to 1886, and granddaughter of John Lee (1779-1859), Principal of Edinburgh University from 1840 to 1859. Autograph letter signed, 1 1/2 pages (both sides - with blank integral leaf), 4,5 x 7 inch, `The Royal Hospital, Dublin` stationery, (Dublin), 10.12.1897, reply letter to "Madam" - concerning the Xmas number of `Home Chat`* and his work `Fourty-one Years in India`**, written and signed in black ink "Grover Cleveland", with a horizontal letter fold and mild signs of age wear - in fine condition. "Dear Madam, Please accept my best thanks for your letter of the 7th instant, and for so kindly sending me the Xmas number of `Home Chat`. I am very pleased to think that you found my `Fourty-one Years in India` sufficiently interesting to prompt you to write such a pretty little story founded / on my reference to the fair haired drummer boy of the 93rd Highlanders. Highlanders. Believe me yours very truly - Roberts" * `Home Chat` was a popular women's magazine published from 1895 to 1959. It appears that the recipient of the letter had written a story based on Roberts' experiences for the Christmas issue.** `Forty-One Years in India` is the famous autobiography of Lord Roberts, published in January 1897. The book was a huge success and went through dozens of printings in its first year alone. In Victorian literature and military history, the image of the brave drummer boy is a widespread symbol of patriotism and childlike innocence in war. The 93rd Sutherland Highlanders Regiment was a famous Scottish infantry unit, particularly known for the Thin Red Line at the Battle of Balaklava.
