About this Item: for Fausto Amidei c. 1745, Rome, 1745. Edition : Very scarce first edition., Contemporary full vellum. Gilt text on morocco label on spine. Pasted and free endpapers., An important example of an early edition of Piranesi?s second work; ?his first work was Prima parte di Architettura e Prospettive (1743), followed in 1745 by Varie Vedute di Roma Antica e Moderna.? An incredibly scarce collection of plates depicting ancient and modern Roman buildings during the mid 18th century. Versions of this early work from Piranesi with the title page dated from 1745 are known to have varying numbers of plates. A thorough investigation and writeup was pioneered by Andrew Robison in his 1970 work, "Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Prolegomena to the Princeton collections" where he says, "the 'Varie Vedute' were not so much a definitely limited collection which had definite editions, but rather an occasional publication which was issued periodically, with its content varying according to individual customer demand or publisher decision."(Princeton University Library Chronicle, Vol. 31, no. 3, p. p. 178-79) Of course, as the years passed the newer editions included more plates. Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) was an Italian draftsman, printmaker, architect, and art theorist. His large prints depicting the buildings of classical and postclassical Rome and its vicinity contributed considerably to Rome?s fame and to the growth of classical archaeology and to the Neo-Classical movement in art., Size : Oblong folio (247x357mm)., Illustrated with an engraved title page and 39 engravings, 17 of which are signed by Piranesi. Other illustrators are Jean Laurent Legeay, Philoté François Duflos, and Paolo Anesi., References : Wilton-Ely p. 90; Hind p. 76-78; Focillon p. 15-17; Wilton-Ely CI, 51-101; Focillon 72-119; Millard 84., P. Endpapers, engraved title, 1-39, endpapers. A fine and handsome example of this scarce first edition. Plates are clean and crisp. Seller Inventory # B5424

About this Item: Rome, Chracas, Barbiellini, Pagliarini, 1747-1761., 1761. 10 tomes in-4 oblong, tome I : 3ff.-LXXIIpp.-1f.-page LXXXIX- frontispice & 20 planches - tome II : LIIpp.-f.- 21 planches - tome III : XLIIpp.- 20 planches - tome IV : LIIpp. (VIII non numérotée)- 21 planches - tome V : XLVIIIpp.- 14 planches - tome VI : LIVpp.- 20 planches - tome VII : LXXVpp.- 25 planches (dont 5 non numérotées) - tome VIII : XLVIIIpp.- 20 planches - tome IX : LIIpp.- 21 planches (XVI non numérotée) - tome X : 1f.-XLVIIIpp.- 20 planches.
